The five steps behind every result
Nothing here is a black box. Here's exactly what runs when you change a number.
1. Base Split by Project Type
Each project type starts from a published midpoint — see the Typical Splits table below. Labor% is simply what's left of 100%.
2. Finish Tier Adjustment
Budget-tier materials shave a few points off material share; premium materials (hardwood, stone, glass, iron) add more, since they scale cost faster than they scale install hours.
3. Complexity Adjustment
Winders and curves mean more angled cuts and fitting time per linear foot of stair, without a proportional increase in material used — so the split shifts toward labor.
4. Region Adjustment
Applied to the labor share only: material is close to national retail pricing wherever you buy it, but installed labor rates swing with the local market.
5. Dollar Split
Material $ = Splittable × Material%
Labor $ = Splittable × Labor%
Permit and design fees, if included, come off the top first — they're neither a material cost nor an installation-labor cost.
Demolition Add-On
Removing and hauling away an existing stair is almost entirely labor and disposal fees, so including it shifts several points from material to labor before the dollar split runs.

Complexity adjustment
L-shape / winder subtracts 4 points from material: 52 − 4 = 48% material / 52% labor. The winders alone already erased the material-side edge this project type started with.
Region adjustment
A higher-cost-of-living area adds 3 points to labor: 52 + 3 = 55% labor / 45% material.
Demo, permits, and the final dollar split
Including demolition adds another 6 points to labor: 55 + 6 = 61% labor / 39% material. A 4% permit & design carve-out removes $480 from the $12,000 budget first, leaving $11,520 to split: Material = $11,520 × 39% = $4,493. Labor = $11,520 × 61% = $7,027. Add back the $480 in permits and the three numbers total exactly $12,000.
This is exactly why a "should be roughly 50/50" gut-check fails here — three separate adjustments (complexity, region, demo) all pushed the same direction, turning a 52/48 material-leaning starting point into a 39/61 labor-leaning result on the same $12,000. Change any one input and the whole chain re-runs.

What actually shifts a quote's material/labor ratio
A total price can hide very different splits underneath it. These four factors explain most of the variation this calculator's adjustments are trying to model.
Material tier scales faster than labor tier
Swapping pressure-treated pine for white oak or wrought iron can double the material line without meaningfully changing install time — which is exactly why the finish-tier adjustment moves material share, not labor share.
DIY-adjacent scopes only include materials
If you're supplying your own labor, the "material only" figure from the table above — not the blended total — is your realistic budget. Add tool rental and disposal separately.
GC overhead & markup sit inside labor, usually
A general contractor's supervision fee is typically layered on top of subcontractor labor and material as a percentage markup rather than tracked as its own bucket — most published "total cost" figures already include it inside the labor share. Permits, design and contingency are a third bucket

Common mistakes when splitting a stair budget
Most budgeting surprises trace back to one of these five assumptions, not to a contractor doing anything wrong.
Assuming every project is 50/50
A refinishing job can be 80% labor while a spiral kit install can be 70% material — the split depends heavily on project type, not just total cost.
Forgetting demo and haul-away
Removing the old stair is real labor and disposal cost that's easy to leave out of a mental budget until it shows up as a line item on the bid.
Burying permit and design fees in "labor"
Permit, inspection and design fees aren't installation labor. Lumping them in inflates the labor share and makes quote comparisons misleading.
Comparing a kit quote to a custom-build quote
