Material% = base(project type)

Each project type starts from a published midpoint — see the Typical Splits table below. Labor% is simply what's left of 100%.

2. Finish Tier Adjustment

Material% += tier adj. (−5 / 0 / +8)

Budget-tier materials shave a few points off material share; premium materials (hardwood, stone, glass, iron) add more, since they scale cost faster than they scale install hours.

3. Complexity Adjustment

Material% −= complexity adj. (0 / 4 / 8 pts)

Winders and curves mean more angled cuts and fitting time per linear foot of stair, without a proportional increase in material used — so the split shifts toward labor.

4. Region Adjustment

Labor% += region adj. (−2 / 0 / +3 pts)

Applied to the labor share only: material is close to national retail pricing wherever you buy it, but installed labor rates swing with the local market.

Removing and hauling away an existing stair is almost entirely labor and disposal fees, so including it shifts several points from material to labor before the dollar split runs.

Demo, permits, and the final dollar split

Including demolition adds another 6 points to labor: 55 + 6 = 61% labor / 39% material. A 4% permit & design carve-out removes $480 from the $12,000 budget first, leaving $11,520 to split: Material = $11,520 × 39% = $4,493. Labor = $11,520 × 61% = $7,027. Add back the $480 in permits and the three numbers total exactly $12,000.

This is exactly why a "should be roughly 50/50" gut-check fails here — three separate adjustments (complexity, region, demo) all pushed the same direction, turning a 52/48 material-leaning starting point into a 39/61 labor-leaning result on the same $12,000. Change any one input and the whole chain re-runs.
