From one basement stair to 93 calculators

Every calculator on this site started from the same kind of specific, annoying, real-world question — not from a keyword list.

Most stair calculators online do one of two things badly. Either they give a single number — a riser height, an angle — with no view of how it fits the rest of the stair, or they're generic construction calculators with "stair" bolted onto the title, using formulas that were never checked against an actual code section. Neither tells you why the number came out the way it did, or flags it when your inputs push you outside what's actually buildable.

That gap is what motivated this site: the idea started with one real question during a basement remodel — how many steps, at what riser height, would fit a rise that didn't divide evenly into a comfortable 7-inch step. Answering it meant cross-referencing the IRC, running the 2R+T comfort formula, and checking the result against the available floor opening — three lookups for one decision.

That question came up on a project Elena was consulting on with Marcus — the two had worked together before, on and off, across a few residential jobs where her structural sign-off and his framing crew's work had to line up. When the idea to build something out of it came up, Elena was the one who pushed it from "we should really have a better tool for this" to an actual plan, and pulled in Jordan — someone the two of them had worked with before — to build it. mystaircalculator.com is the three of them, still running it together: independently owned and operated by Marcus Hale, Elena Voss, and Jordan Okonkwo, not a company or agency-run site.

Codes get amended locally, and IRC itself is on a three-year revision cycle — 2021 is our current working baseline, stated explicitly rather than implied as universally current. Local jurisdictions often adopt an edition with amendments, which is why every calculator tells you to confirm final numbers with your building department rather than treating our output as permit-ready.

Where a figure hasn't been traced to a primary citation — usually a situation code doesn't directly address, like a fixed-ladder slope threshold — the calculator shows a visible [VERIFY] flag instead of presenting an unsourced number as settled fact.

What happens when the comfort formula and the code minimum disagree

The standard 2R+T comfort formula (2 × riser + tread should land near 24–25") suggests a shallower tread as riser height increases. But IRC sets a hard 10" minimum tread depth regardless of what the formula recommends. Once riser height climbs past roughly 7.5", those two numbers conflict.

Naive approach

Apply 2R+T directly and output whatever tread depth the formula returns — even if it falls below 10" and is no longer code-legal.

What we shipped

Tread depth is floored at IRC's 10" minimum whenever the comfort formula would go lower, and the resulting stair angle is recalculated and flagged if it exits the 30–37° comfort range.

This is also why that calculator's angle output can land steeper than the "comfortable" range even when every individual riser and tread number passes its own check — the two limits aren't always compatible, and hiding that trade-off would have made the tool less useful, not more polished. It's documented directly in that calculator's FAQ rather than left as a surprise in the output.

No. Every calculator is a planning and estimation aid, not a stamped engineering document. Final dimensions should always be confirmed against your local building department's adopted code, since amendments vary by state and county.
What code editions do you use?
Residential geometry calculators are checked against the 2021 International Residential Code (IRC). Commercial stair tools reference the International Building Code (IBC). Accessibility tools reference ADA 505 and ICC A117.1. Each calculator states its reference where relevant.
What does the [VERIFY] tag on some calculators mean?
It means we haven't yet traced that specific figure to a primary code citation, usually because the situation isn't directly addressed by code, such as a fixed-ladder slope threshold. We flag it visibly instead of presenting an unsourced number as settled fact.
