Pricing a 42" deck stair, 36" wide, pressure-treated
Same formulas, filled in step by step, for a 3'-6" deck climbing down to grade — the default this calculator loads with.
Geometry
42" rise ÷ 7.5" target = 5.6, rounds to 6 steps. Actual riser = 42 ÷ 6 = 7.0". Tread depth = 25 − 14 = 11" (clears the 10" minimum, so no override kicks in here). Total run = 5 treads × 11" = 55".
Stringers
36" width needs ceil(36÷16)+1 = 4 stringers. Stringer length = √(42²+55²) ≈ 69.2". Add 14" for the birdsmouth and notches → 83.2" raw need, which rounds up to a stocked 8' (96") board per stringer.
The guardrail trigger — where two rules interact
42" is above the commonly-cited 30" guard-required threshold, so Auto mode switches the Guardrail Cost line from $0 to a real number even though nothing about the stair's geometry changed. This is the single biggest swing in the whole estimate: the same stair at a 28" deck height would skip this cost entirely.
Labor, if Pro Install is selected
6 steps × 1.25 hrs/step = 7.5 hrs framing and treads, plus roughly 0.5 hr per linear foot of rail if a guardrail is included, plus footing time. Modern ACQ pressure-treated lumber reacts with plain or electro-galvanized steel. Hot-dip galvanized or stainless fasteners cost more but are the difference between a stair that lasts and one that streaks and fails early — this calculator's hardware allowance assumes the corrosion-resistant option.
Permits & inspection
Most jurisdictions require a permit for a new or rebuilt deck stair attached to a structure, with a flat or size-based fee plus an inspection visit.
