Tread Depth (2R+T rule)

T = 25 − 2R  (min. 10")

Standard comfort formula, floored at the 10" IRC minimum — the same rule and the same floor value used by this site's Rise and Run Calculator.

Stringer Board Length

Board = next stock length ≥ (√(Rise²+Run²) + 14")

Straight-line stringer length plus roughly 14" for the birdsmouth cut and notch waste, rounded up to a stocked lumber length.

Decking / Tread Cost

Cost = Boards/Tread × Width(ft) × Treads × $/ft × (1+Waste)

Each tread needs enough deck boards, laid across the stair width, to cover its depth — priced per linear foot of the material you selected.

Guardrail Cost

Cost = Stringer Length(ft) × Sides × $/ft (if Rise > 30")

Worked example

Pricing a 42" deck stair, 36" wide, pressure-treated

Same formulas, filled in step by step, for a 3'-6" deck climbing down to grade — the default this calculator loads with.

Geometry

42" rise ÷ 7.5" target = 5.6, rounds to 6 steps. Actual riser = 42 ÷ 6 = 7.0". Tread depth = 25 − 14 = 11" (clears the 10" minimum, so no override kicks in here). Total run = 5 treads × 11" = 55".

Stringers

36" width needs ceil(36÷16)+1 = 4 stringers. Stringer length = √(42²+55²) ≈ 69.2". Add 14" for the birdsmouth and notches → 83.2" raw need, which rounds up to a stocked 8' (96") board per stringer.

The guardrail trigger — where two rules interact

42" is above the commonly-cited 30" guard-required threshold, so Auto mode switches the Guardrail Cost line from $0 to a real number even though nothing about the stair's geometry changed. This is the single biggest swing in the whole estimate: the same stair at a 28" deck height would skip this cost entirely.
