Measuring your stair before you order composite decking

This calculator is a materials takeoff, not a layout planner — it assumes you already know your tread count and stair width from framing or a design plan.

Count your treads and risers

Count each horizontal walking surface below the top deck or landing as one tread. The number of risers is always one more than the number of treads — the last "riser" lands you on the deck surface itself.

Measure clear stair width

Measure the finished walking width between stringers or skirt boards, not the outside stringer-to-stringer framing dimension. Residential code requires at least 36" clear.

Decide your target tread depth

Most composite manufacturers require at least 11" of board coverage on a stair tread — deeper than the 10" IRC minimum used for interior wood stairs. Confirm your brand's stair-specific minimum before setting this field.

Confirm your board profile and stringer spacing

Actual board width (usually 5.5"), available lengths, and the manufacturer's required stair-stringer spacing all come straight from your product's installation guide — they are not universal across brands.

Boards Per Tread

smallest n where n·W + (n−1)·G ≥ D

The fewest boards, at your actual board width (W) and gap (G), that reach or exceed your target tread coverage depth (D). Almost never one board — standard decking is far narrower than a code-legal tread.

Pieces Per Long Board

p = floor( L ÷ (Width + Kerf) )

How many stair-width pieces you can crosscut from one long board (L), after losing a bit of length to each saw cut and end-squaring pass.

Boards to Buy

Buy = ceil( ceil(Pieces ÷ p) × (1 + Waste%) )

Exact pieces needed, converted to whole long boards, then padded by your waste factor for mis-cuts and color-lot matching — applied to tread boards and riser boards separately.

Stringers Needed

Stringers = ceil( Width ÷ Spacing ) + 1

Same shape as a wood stringer count, but composite tread spans call for tighter spacing than a wood-frame default — see the Fastening & Spacing section for why the two numbers diverge.

Fastener Count

Fasteners = 2 × Boards × Stringers

Two fastening points per board (leading and trailing edge) at every stringer or support the board crosses — whether those points get a face screw or a hidden clip.

Riser Board Match

Fascia = 7.25" if H ≤ 7.25", else 11.25"

Composite riser/fascia stock is sold in fixed catalog heights, not cut to order — you buy the next size up and rip it down to your actual riser height.

Walking through a 13-tread, 36"-wide flight

Boards per tread

Target depth is 11.25". One 5.5"-wide board isn't close. Two boards plus a 1/4" gap give 5.5 + 5.5 + 0.25 = 11.25" — exactly on target, so every tread gets 2 boards.

Tread boards to buy

13 treads × 2 boards = 26 pieces needed. A 16' (192") board yields floor(192 ÷ 36.25) = 5 pieces per board, so 26 ÷ 5 = 5.2, rounded up to 6 boards. Add the 10% waste factor: 6 × 1.10 = 6.6, rounded up to 7 boards to buy.

Riser boards to buy

14 risers at 7.71" each exceed the 7.25" fascia catalog size, so this flight needs the 11.25"-tall fascia ripped down — a common ordering trap covered in Common Mistakes below. A 12' (144") fascia board yields 3 pieces at this stair width, so 14 ÷ 3 = 4.67 → 5 boards, ×1.10 waste → 6 fascia boards.

Stringers and fasteners

At a 12" o.c. support spacing, this 36"-wide stair needs ceil(36 ÷ 12) + 1 = 4 stringers. Face-screwed at 2 points per board per stringer: 2 × 26 tread boards × 4 stringers = 208 tread screws, plus 2 × 14 riser boards × 4 = 112 riser screws, for 320 screws total.

Widen this same stair to 42" and the composite-specific 12" spacing crosses into a 5th stringer (ceil(42÷12)+1=5) while a wood-frame stair at the same width, spaced at 16" o.c., still only needs 4 — a direct, calculable consequence of composite's tighter support requirement, not a rounding artifact.

Why stringer spacing tightens for composite

Composite boards flex more than solid wood under a concentrated foot load, and a stair tread takes a harder, more localized hit than field decking does. Most manufacturers tighten their stair-stringer spacing accordingly — this is a genuinely different number from the 16" o.c. wood-stringer spacing used on this site's wood-framed stair pages, not an inconsistency. Choosing a fastening method

Face screw  vs.  Hidden clip

Hidden clips work well on interior deck-field boards where both long edges are grooved, but a stair tread's leading (nosing) edge is usually exposed and square-cut, so it commonly still needs a face screw or a dedicated nosing clip even on an otherwise clip-fastened deck.

Open riser code check

Gap < 4" sphere when height > 30"

IRC R311.7.5.1 permits open risers, but once the stair's walking surface sits more than 30" above the grade or floor below, the opening between treads can't pass a 4" diameter sphere. This calculator flags when that threshold applies based on your entered stair height above grade.

Fastener corrosion & mushrooming

Use composite-rated screws only

Standard deck screws are cut for wood fiber and tend to mushroom or split composite material around the pilot hole. Manufacturer-specific composite screws (or the matching color-cap system) avoid this and are usually required to keep the product warranty intact.

These are planning-stage estimates, not a stamped structural design. A wide stair, a heavy finish, or an unusual load may need an engineer's sign-off regardless of what this calculator shows.

Can I use regular deck boards for stair treads, or do I need special stair tread boards?
Standard deck boards work fine for stair treads and are what this calculator assumes. Some brands also sell dedicated stair-tread boards with a built-in bullnose profile and wider face — those skip the double-board layout but cost more per linear foot.
How wide should a composite stair tread be?
Most composite manufacturers set an 11" minimum tread coverage depth, deeper than the 10" IRC code minimum used for interior wood stairs. Since a single standard board is only about 5.5" wide, hitting 11" almost always means two boards with a gap between them.
Do composite stair treads need a gap between boards?
