This tool orders finish material — the tread caps and riser boards you actually see and walk on — not the structural stringers underneath them. Get your step counts right first.
Get your tread and riser counts
If you've already run the Stair Rise and Run Calculator, use its Treads and Steps outputs directly. Otherwise count the walking surfaces (treads) and vertical faces (risers) on your layout — there's usually one more riser than tread.
Enter tread depth and riser height
Use the structural riser-to-riser run and the per-step rise, not the finished board dimensions — nosing overhang gets added separately in the Advanced panel.
Set your stock and return options
Pick solid board or sheet goods for risers, and flag whether either side of the stair is open-stringer — an open side needs a mitered return that adds length to every affected piece.
Read board footage against the stock-width chip
Green means your tread depth plus nosing fits standard pre-milled 1x12 tread stock. Red means you're into special-order or edge-glued panel territory before you order anything.
The five calculations behind every result
Nothing on this page is a black box. Here's exactly what runs when you change a number.
Tread Board Footage
Thickness × cut length × board depth (tread depth plus nosing), in inches, divided by 144 square inches per board foot — then multiplied by piece count.
Riser Material Quantity
Sheet: SqFt = (L × H) ÷ 144
Solid riser boards are priced and ordered in board feet, including thickness. Sheet goods are priced in square feet — thickness only affects which sheet grade you buy, not the area.
Cut Length with Returns
Each open-stringer side adds one nosing-depth of mitered return to the piece's cut length. A closed stair on both sides adds nothing.
Precut Stock Length
Pre-milled tread caps are sold in fixed lengths, not cut to order. The calculator rounds your cut length up to the nearest stocked size and reports the leftover as trim waste.
Sheet Count
A standard sheet good is 4×8′ = 32 sq ft. This is an area-only estimate — see the Stock Selection section below for why real yield can be lower.
Waste-Adjusted Total
Applied to both tread board footage and riser quantity, to cover milling defects, grain runout, and miscuts before they become a mid-job material shortage.
Finishing the same 108" stair
Same flight as the Rise and Run Calculator's default example: 13 treads, 14 risers, a 7.71" actual riser and a 10" tread depth on a 36"-wide, closed-stringer stair.
Board depth needed
10" structural tread depth + 1.25" nosing overhang = 11.25" board depth. Standard pre-milled hardwood tread caps top out around 11.5" actual width, so this fits — but only by a quarter inch. Bump the nosing to 1.5" and you'd tip over into special-order stock.
Cut length
Both sides closed (no open stringer), so cut length is just the 36" stair width. That happens to match a stocked precut tread-cap length exactly — zero trim waste on this particular flight.
Tread board footage
Pre-fab cap thickness 1.0625" × 36" × 11.25" ÷ 144 = 2.99 bf per tread. Across 13 treads that's 38.84 bf, and with a 12% waste factor: ~43.5 bf to order.
Riser material, two ways
Solid 3/4" riser boards: 0.75" × 36" × 7.71" ÷ 144 = 1.45 bf per riser × 14 = 20.24 bf, plus waste: ~22.7 bf. Sheet goods instead: (36 × 7.71) ÷ 144 = 1.93 sq ft per riser × 14 = 27 sq ft, plus waste ~30.2 sq ft — under the 32 sq ft in a single 4×8 sheet by area. Whether that's really one sheet in practice depends on cutting orientation — see below.
This is why the stock-width chip matters even on an ordinary residential stair — a 10" tread depth is comfortably inside code, but once nosing is added it can sit close to the edge of what standard 1x12 tread stock actually offers.

Stock selection & return allowances
A material takeoff can pencil out perfectly on board footage and still come up short on site for reasons the area math alone doesn't catch.
Why sheet-good sqft isn't the whole story
The Sheets Needed output divides total square footage by 32 — a pure area estimate. Actual yield depends on how riser-height strips nest across a 48"×96" sheet: cutting across the 96" dimension at a 7–8" riser height typically yields around 12 usable strips per sheet, not an unlimited area-based count. Always sketch a cut diagram before ordering only the calculated minimum.
Open-stringer returns need more than length
A mitered return on an open stringer isn't just extra board length — the return piece typically needs to carry the same nosing profile as the front edge, which can mean ripping the return from wider stock than a closed-stringer tread would need.
Grain and color matching
Tread caps are the most visible horizontal surface in a stair run. Pros commonly over-order slightly and pull all treads from the same milling lot or board run so color and grain read consistently step to step — a bigger visual issue than on risers, which read as a single vertical plane.
Riser reveal under the nosing
Many finish details slightly recess the riser board under the tread's nosing rather than butting it flush. This shaves a small, typically sub-1/4" amount off the riser board's finished height — negligible for material quantity, but worth accounting for when cutting to a tight-fitting reveal line.
These are planning-stage estimates for ordering purposes, not a substitute for a shop cut-list drawn against your actual as-built stringer.
Common mistakes when ordering tread and riser material
Most mid-job material shortages on stair finish work trace back to one of these five estimating errors.
Ordering tread stock at riser-to-riser depth only
Forgetting to add the nosing overhang to the board depth means every tread cap arrives too narrow once it's supposed to overhang the riser face below.
Skipping the open-stringer return allowance
An open side needs a mitered return that extends past the stair width. Cutting all pieces to exactly the stair width leaves the open end short and exposes raw edge grain.
Under-estimating waste on solid hardwood
Solid stock loses more yield to defects, grain runout and color-matching culls than sheet goods do. A waste factor that's fine for plywood risers is often too thin for hardwood tread caps.
Custom-milling instead of buying precut
Ordering a one-off board length when your cut length is within an inch or two of a stocked precut size usually costs more per piece than just buying the stocked length and trimming it.
Assuming tread count equals riser count
Most flights have one more riser than tread — the top tread is the upper floor itself. Ordering equal quantities of each is a common way to end up one riser board short.
