How to measure

Measuring a flight for riser trim

Riser trim is bought and cut per riser, not per stair type — get the count and the widest riser right first, and the rest of the material list follows.

Count every riser in the flight

Count vertical riser faces, not treads — a 14-step flight has 14 risers, including the top riser at the upper floor and the bottom riser at the floor below. Flights separated by a landing each get their own count.

Measure the widest riser, not just one

Site-built stairs are rarely perfectly consistent. Measure two or three risers and use the widest as your Stair Width input — trimming a slightly-long piece down is fast, a slightly-short piece is scrap.

Identify every open stringer end

Walk the flight and note which risers have an exposed cut end — typically one side on a wall-to-open stair, both sides on a floating or balcony-side stair. Each open end needs a mitered return.

Measure your actual trim thickness

The return allowance is driven by the trim (or riser board) thickness you're actually installing, not a fixed number — set it in the Advanced panel once you know your material.

The math

The five formulas behind every result

Nothing on this page is a black box. Here's exactly what runs when you change a number.

Trim Length per Riser

L = Width + (Open Ends × Return Depth)

The base riser width, plus one return-depth allowance for every exposed open end that needs a mitered return.

Raw Total Footage

F_raw = (Risers × L) ÷ 12

Every riser's trim length added together across the flight, converted from inches to feet.

Footage Including Waste

F_total = F_raw × (1 + Waste% ÷ 100)

Adds a cushion for miter cuts, defects, and pattern or grain matching loss before you go to the lumberyard.

Stock Boards Needed

Boards = ceil( F_total ÷ Stock Length )

Rounded up — you always buy whole boards, never a fraction, and the last board is rarely used to its full length.

Stock Utilization

Util% = F_total ÷ (Boards × Stock Length) × 100

How efficiently the boards you're buying actually get used. Low utilization means a different stock length would waste less.

Worked example

Walking through a 14-riser flight, open one side

Same five formulas, filled in step by step, for a 14-riser flight at 36" width with one open stringer end — the default this calculator loads with.

Trim length per riser

36" stair width, one open end, 0.75" return depth: 36 + (1 × 0.75) = 36.75" per riser. An enclosed riser on the same stair would only need the base 36".

Raw footage

14 risers × 36.75" = 514.5" total. Divide by 12: 42.88 ft of raw trim length before any waste allowance.

Footage including waste

At a 10% waste factor: 42.88 × 1.10 = 47.16 ft. This is the number to actually shop against, not the raw figure from step 2.

Boards and utilization

Buying 8' (96") stock: 47.16 ÷ 8 = 5.90, which rounds up to 6 boards — 48 ft purchased. Utilization comes out to 47.16 ÷ 48 ≈ 98%, meaning almost none of what you buy goes unused. At a price of $3.25/ft that's roughly $156 before tax.

Notice boards are rounded up whole, not fractionally — going from 47.15 ft to 47.17 ft can silently push you into a 7th board if it crosses an 8' multiple. Small waste-factor changes near a stock-length boundary are worth re-checking before you place an order.

Two things trip people up that pure footage math can't catch: which profile you actually need, and when a return is required versus optional.

What "riser trim" covers

Seam & end-grain concealment

Riser trim and riser caps are applied where the riser meets the tread nosing and along cut edges, hiding the seam and any exposed plywood end grain left after the riser panel is installed — not a structural or code item.

Cove vs. base cap vs. scribe

Profile ≠ length math

Cove molding, base cap, and scribe molding are the common profile choices for this job; profile only changes the look and the miter technique, not the linear-footage formulas on this page.

When a return is optional vs. required

Open end = required

A riser that dies into a wall or a full skirt board never needs a return. A riser with any exposed cut end — an open stringer, a floating tread, a balcony-side stair — needs one to avoid visible end grain.

Matching an existing profile

Species + profile continuity

If risers run into a baseboard or skirt profile at the top or bottom of the flight, matching that same profile end-to-end reads as one continuous detail instead of three mismatched trim runs.

This calculator returns quantities only. Profile selection and grade (paint vs. stain) are project decisions your supplier or finish carpenter should confirm against the rest of the stair's trim package.

Common questions

What is riser trim or a riser cap, exactly?
It's a molding piece applied to a riser to conceal the seam where the riser meets the tread nosing and to cover any exposed cut edges or end grain, giving the riser a finished, built-in look rather than a raw panel edge.
Do I need riser trim on every stair, or only open-riser stairs?
Any stair can use it for a cleaner finished seam, but it becomes functionally necessary on open-riser or open-stringer stairs, where an exposed cut edge would otherwise show raw end grain.
How do I measure for riser trim if my risers aren't all the same width?
Measure several risers and enter the widest one as your Stair Width. It's faster to trim a slightly long piece down on-site than to discover a piece is short after it's cut.
What's a mitered return and why does it add extra length?
A mitered return is a small 45°-cut piece that wraps the trim's profile around an exposed end so no flat cut edge or end grain is visible. It adds roughly one material-thickness worth of length at each open end.
How much waste should I add for riser trim?
A commonly used starting range in the trade is roughly 8–15%, higher toward the top of that range for stain-grade material needing grain or color matching. Confirm the right number for your material and crew before ordering — see the Advanced panel note above.
What stock length should I buy?
Whichever length gives the highest Stock Utilization result above for your specific riser count and width — an 8' board is a common default, but a longer or shorter length can waste noticeably less depending on how your total footage falls against the board length.
Can I use baseboard base cap as riser trim?
Yes — base cap is a common and inexpensive profile choice for riser trim, and using the same profile as the room's baseboard helps the stair read as a continuation of the existing trim package.
Does riser trim need to match the tread nosing trim?

How is riser trim different from the riser board itself?
The riser board or panel is the full vertical face of the step; riser trim is the smaller molding applied on top of or around it to finish the seams. Board footage for the panel itself is a separate calculation — see the Tread and Riser Material Calculator.
What material should I use — MDF, oak, or poplar?
Paint-grade jobs commonly use MDF or poplar for cost and a smooth painted finish; stain-grade jobs use a hardwood matching the treads and handrail, most often oak. This calculator's quantities apply the same way regardless of material choice.
Do I need a return on both ends if the stair is open on one side only?
No — set Open Stringer Ends to 1. Only the exposed side needs a return; the wall or skirt-board side of the same riser doesn't need one.
How many boards should I actually buy — the calculated number or one extra?
The Stock Boards result already includes your waste factor, but it assumes no cutting mistakes. Most finish carpenters add at least one additional board beyond the calculated count as a job-site buffer.
