How to measure

Measuring your stairs before you order tile

Tile is sold by the box, not the inch — a small measuring miss here means a return trip to the supplier mid-job. Get these five numbers first.

Count treads and risers separately

A closed flight normally has one more riser than tread, because the top riser meets the upper floor and doesn't get its own tread. Count each surface you're actually tiling, not just the step count.

Measure tread run, not the finished tile surface

Tread run is the flat horizontal part of the step, wall to nosing edge. The calculator adds a nosing overhang on top of this automatically — don't measure past the nosing yourself or you'll double it up.

Measure riser height and stair width

Riser height is floor-to-floor divided by step count. Stair width is the clear side-to-side width you're tiling — measure the narrowest point if walls or a guard aren't perfectly parallel.

Decide risers, landing, layout and tile size

Toggle riser tile on or off, add a landing if one's part of the run, then pick a straight or diagonal layout and your tile size to get a waste-adjusted count.

The four formulas behind every result

Nothing on this page is a black box. Here's exactly what runs when you change a number.

Tread Tile Area

A = (Run + Overhang) × Width ÷ 144

Per-tread tile surface in square feet, summed across every tread you entered.

Riser Tile Area

A = Riser Height × Width ÷ 144

Per-riser face area, summed across every riser — only counted when riser tile is switched on.

Waste-Adjusted Coverage

A_total = (ΣTreads + ΣRisers + Landing) × (1 + Waste%)

All field area added together, then inflated by your layout's cut-waste factor before you ever get to a tile count.

Tile & Box Count

Tiles = ceil(A_total ÷ Tile Area)  ·  Boxes = ceil(Tiles ÷ Tiles per Box)

Tile area comes from your selected tile size; box count rounds up to whatever your supplier actually sells.

Worked example

Walking through 13 treads, 14 risers, and a landing

Same numbers this calculator loads with — 13 treads and a 7.71" riser are the exact figures produced by the default 108" example on the Stair Rise and Run Calculator, so the two pages agree end to end.

Tread area

10" run + 1" nosing overhang = 11" tile depth. 11" × 36" width ÷ 144 = 2.75 ft² per tread. Across 13 treads: 35.75 ft².

Riser area

7.71" riser × 36" width ÷ 144 = 1.93 ft² per riser. Across 14 risers: 26.99 ft².

Field area plus a 12 ft² landing

35.75 + 26.99 + 12 = 74.74 ft² of field tile before any waste is added.

Waste, tiles, and boxes

At a 15% diagonal-layout waste factor: 74.74 × 1.15 ≈ 85.95 ft². With 1 ft² (12"×12") tile, that's 86 tiles. At 10 tiles per box: ceil(86 ÷ 10) = 9 boxes — note the last box is only partly used, which is the rounding this calculator does automatically so you don't under-order.

These are widely used contractor rules of thumb, not a fixed standard — treat them as a starting point and confirm against your specific tile and installer's experience.

Beyond square footage

Nosing trim, landings & layout cuts

A tile order can match the square footage exactly and still come up short on site over three things this section covers — nosing trim, riser cuts, and pattern continuity onto a landing.

Nosing trim is a separate SKU

Trim = (Width × Treads) ÷ 12

Field tile square footage never includes the bullnose or metal nosing edge that finishes the front of each tread. Budget it separately using the linked Stair Nose Trim Calculator — this page's Nosing Trim result gives you the raw linear footage as a starting estimate.

Riser tile almost always needs a cut

Riser Height (~7.5–7.75") < Most Tile Modules

Because a code-typical riser is shorter than a standard 12" tile, nearly every riser piece is a factory or site cut rather than a full tile — this is on top of whatever layout waste percentage you selected, which is why riser-heavy jobs tend to run closer to the high end of the ranges in the table above.

Matching pattern onto a landing

Landing Area = its own field, same tile lot

A landing reads as one continuous surface, so grout lines and tile lot/shade should carry over from the treads. Order landing tile from the same batch as the stair tile whenever the two are visible together, and include it in one combined order rather than two separate ones.

Grout joint width isn't in this math

Joint width → layout planning, not tile count

A wider grout joint changes how a pattern lines up across steps but has a negligible effect on total tile count at stair scale. This calculator doesn't adjust for it — plan joint width with your installer when setting out the first tread.

These are material-takeoff estimates, not a substitute for a site measure. Always verify final quantities against your actual layout before placing a tile order.

Most mid-job tile shortages trace back to one of these five planning errors, not to bad installation.

Measuring only the code tread run and skipping the extra inch or so the tile surface actually covers past the riser below it undercounts every single tread.

Confirming riser tile is or isn't part of the job after the field tile is already ordered is one of the most common causes of a rushed second order.

Common questions

How many tiles do I need for stairs?
Add up the tile-surface area of every tread and riser you're covering, plus any landing, then inflate that total by a layout-specific waste percentage before dividing by your tile's area. This calculator does all four steps live as you enter your measurements.
Do I need to tile the risers too?
Only if the stair has closed risers and the design calls for a finished riser face. Open-riser stairs, or designs pairing tile treads with painted, wood, or carpeted risers, can switch riser tile off to remove that area from the count.
What's a good waste factor for stair tile?
A straight layout commonly runs around 10% and a diagonal or pattern layout closer to 15%, though these are rules of thumb that vary by tile and installer — confirm your specific figure locally before finalizing an order.
Why does riser tile need more waste than tread tile?
Riser height is almost always shorter than a standard tile module, so nearly every riser piece is a factory or site cut rather than a full tile — that's on top of whatever general layout waste percentage applies to the job.
Do I need bullnose tile for stair nosing?

Can I use large-format tile on stair treads?
Yes, but a tread is a narrow surface, so a large tile is more likely to need a full-length rip cut and carries a higher breakage risk during that cut — budget waste toward the higher end of the range for your layout.
How is tread tile depth different from tread run?
Tread run is the flat horizontal step depth used in code and layout calculations. The physical tile surface typically extends slightly past that, out over the nosing edge — this calculator adds that overhang automatically so you don't have to measure it separately.
Should I include the landing in the same tile order?
Yes, when the landing is visible alongside the treads. Ordering it from the same lot avoids a visible shade mismatch, and combining it into one order is usually cheaper than a second small purchase later.
How many boxes of tile do I need?
Divide your waste-adjusted tile count by the number of tiles per box and round up — a partially used final box is normal and expected, not a sign you measured wrong.
What tile size works best for stairs?
Smaller-format tile (12"×12" or similar) generally cuts more cleanly to fit narrow tread and riser dimensions with less waste per cut than large-format tile, though the final choice usually comes down to matching an existing floor.
Does grout joint width change how many tiles I need?
