Measuring your flight before you order trim
Nose trim is ordered by the linear foot, but the number that actually drives the order is how many exposed edges you have and how they're finished at each end.
Count the exposed tread edges
Every tread gets a nosing piece across its front edge — the top landing only needs one if it's open to the stairwell below, not if it butts a wall or continues into flooring.
Measure clear stair width
Wall to wall, or stringer to stringer on an open side. This is the straight run of nosing on a closed tread, before any return allowance for an open stringer end.
Identify open stringer ends
An open stringer exposes the tread end — the nosing has to wrap it with a mitred return, not just stop flush. Set Closed, Single Open, or Double Open so the calculator adds the extra material and counts the return cuts.
Pick material and stock length
Decorative nosing comes in fixed stock lengths and needs a clean mitre at every return; anti-slip strip is more forgiving of butt joints. Check the stock lengths your supplier actually carries before finalizing pieces.

Length per Tread
Each open stringer end adds a mitred return wrap, not just a longer straight cut — that's separate material, not a rounding fudge.
Total Raw Length
Every tread's nosing length added up, plus a straight landing run if the top or a mid-flight landing is open and needs one too.
Waste-Adjusted Length
Covers mitre off-cuts, defects, and the piece you cut wrong. This is the number you actually order against.
Pieces Needed
Rounds up to a whole stock piece — you can't buy 5.3 boards. This is where small waste-factor changes can silently push you into an extra full piece.
Return Cuts Needed
Each open stringer side needs one mitred return per tread. A double-open stringer doubles this count against a single-open one, for the same tread count.
Walking through a real 13-tread, single-open flight

Length per tread
36" clear width plus one 1.5" return allowance for the single open stringer end: 36 + 1.5 = 37.5" per tread.
Total raw length
37.5" × 13 treads = 487.5". No landing nosing in this example, so that's the full raw total before waste.
Waste-adjusted length
At the default 10% waste factor: 487.5 × 1.10 = 536.25" (44.7 ft). This is the number you actually order against, not the raw 487.5".
Pieces, returns and the rounding trap
At a 96" stock length: 536.25 ÷ 96 = 5.59, which rounds up to 6 pieces — even though 5 pieces (480") would almost cover it. That last 56.25" of the 6th board becomes offcut. Return cuts: 13 treads × 1 open end = 13 mitred returns.
This is why the piece count and the waste factor interact more than they look like they should: nudge the waste factor from 10% down to 8%, and the total drops to 526.5" — still 6 pieces. But switch from Single to Double Open stringer, and the extra 19.5" of return material (13 × 1.5") tips several stock-length choices into needing a 7th piece. Always re-check piece count after changing stringer exposure, not just after changing width.

Open stringer returns, landing nosing & overhang code
A nose trim order can be perfectly measured in linear feet and still come up short on-site — for one of these three reasons.
Why open stringer returns cost extra
An open stringer exposes the tread's cut end. The nosing has to wrap that end with a mitred return rather than stopping flush against a wall — that's a separate mitre cut and roughly 1–2" of extra material per open end, not a rounding error to skip.
When a landing needs its own nosing
If the top landing (or a mid-flight landing) is open to the stairwell below, its leading edge needs the same nosing profile as a tread — flag it in Advanced, since it's easy to measure every tread and forget the one edge that isn't a tread at all.
Nosing overhang and code
Most residential code sets a minimum and maximum projection for the nosing past the riser face. Too little overhang looks unfinished; too much becomes a trip hazard on the tread above. This is jurisdiction-specific — check locally before you cut, not after.
Anti-slip retrofit considerations
Commercial and rental retrofits often need a visually contrasting leading edge and a minimum slip-resistance rating, on top of the linear footage this calculator gives you. Those requirements vary by occupancy and jurisdiction — this tool sizes the material, not the compliance sign-off.
These are planning-stage estimates. A commercial retrofit or an unusual stringer detail may need a code consultant's sign-off regardless of what this calculator shows.
Common mistakes when ordering nose trim
Most nose-trim shortfalls trace back to one of these five planning errors, not to bad cutting.
Measuring width, not nosing run
Clear stair width is only the straight run on a closed tread. Skip the return allowance on an open stringer and every piece comes up short at the exposed end.
Ignoring open stringer return cuts
Ordering exact linear footage with no allowance for mitred returns is the single most common reason a nose-trim order runs short mid-install.
Using decorative waste factors for anti-slip strip
Continuous anti-slip strip has far less mitre waste than bullnose with return cuts — applying the higher decorative factor over-orders material and cost.
Forgetting an open landing edge
A landing that's open to the stairwell below needs its own nosing piece. It's easy to count every tread correctly and still miss this one edge.
Not checking piece-count rounding
A small change in waste factor or width can push the total just over a stock-length threshold, forcing a whole extra board for a few leftover inches — check the Pieces Needed result before ordering, not after.
