Measuring a staircase before you buy paint or stain
Coverage estimates are only as good as the surfaces you actually count. Most people undercount risers and stringers, then run short mid-job.
Count every step, then check your riser type
Count risers floor to floor, including the bottom one. Then look underneath: if you can see through the stair from the side, risers are open and there's no riser face to paint — if there's a solid board under each nosing, they're closed.
Measure one tread and one riser, not all of them
Stair treads and risers are built uniform, so one accurate tread depth, riser height, and clear stair width is enough to extrapolate the whole flight — measuring every single step wastes time for the same answer.
Check the surface condition
Run a hand across a tread. Bare, sanded, or freshly-installed wood absorbs the first coat unevenly and usually needs a primer (for paint) or a heavier first stain coat. Existing paint or a sealed finish behaves predictably and needs neither.
Decide what else is getting finished
Open stringers, a skirt board along the wall, and a handrail with balusters are each a separate paintable surface. Toggle the Advanced sections on only for the ones your project actually includes — most closed-stringer stairs only need treads and risers.
The six formulas behind every result

Tread (Walking Surface) Area
Steps minus one because the top "step" is the upper finished floor, not a tread you own. Result converts square inches to square feet.
Riser Face Area
Every riser gets counted, including the bottom one. Open-riser stairs skip this entirely — there's no vertical face to coat.
First-Coat Absorption
Bare, unsealed wood pulls more finish into the grain on the very first coat. [VERIFY: 30% absorption penalty is a general rule of thumb — porous woods like pine or oak can vary well beyond this]
Open Stringer & Skirt Area
Only counted when those toggles are switched on — closed (boxed) stringers are hidden and never need finish.
Total Volume Needed
Each coat is summed separately so the first-coat absorption penalty only hits coat one, then the waste factor is applied to the whole total.
Container Rounding
Rounds up to the nearest real quart increment — you can't buy 0.61 gallons off a shelf, only quarts and gallons.

Paintable area
13 treads at 10"×36" = 4,680 sq in ÷144 = 32.5 ft². 14 closed risers at 7.71"×36" = 3,885.8 sq in ÷144 ≈ 27.0 ft². Total paintable area: 59.5 ft².
Primer requirement
Bare wood plus paint triggers a primer coat, at an estimated 300 ft²/gal: 59.5 ÷ 300 ≈ 0.20 gal of primer — a separate can from the topcoat, and the first place people under-buy.
Topcoat, with first-coat absorption
Because primer sealed the wood, both topcoats use the full 350 ft²/gal rate: coat 1 = 59.5÷350 ≈ 0.170 gal, coat 2 = 0.170 gal. Topcoat subtotal: ≈0.34 gal. (Had this been stain instead of paint, no primer would be used, and coat 1 alone would drop to 245 ft²/gal — pulling roughly 30% more stain for that first coat only.)
Waste factor and container rounding
Add the 10% waste factor: primer 0.20×1.1≈0.22 gal, topcoat 0.34×1.1≈0.37 gal. Rounding each up to the nearest quart: primer needs 1 quart, topcoat needs 2 quarts — three quarts total, not a full gallon of anything, and two separate products to pick up.
This is the cascade worth noticing: switching Surface Condition to "bare" doesn't just add a line item — it pulls in an entire separate primer can that a shopper eyeballing "a gallon of stair paint" typically forgets to budget for, even though the topcoat itself barely uses half a quart.
Paint vs. stain, side by side

Coverage figures are general planning estimates. Every can label states the manufacturer's actual rate for that specific product and sheen — use the Coverage Rate Override field above once you have it.
Stringers, primer & sheen — the second-order decisions
A correct area calculation can still leave you with the wrong product, the wrong prep, or a slippery tread. These four decisions sit outside the area math but change the result just as much.
Open vs. closed stringers
A closed (boxed) stringer is fully hidden behind the drywall or skirt board and needs zero finish. An open, cut stringer shows its full sawtooth profile on both faces of the flight and is one of the most commonly forgotten paintable surfaces on an open-sided staircase.
Why bare wood needs a primer, not just more paint
A bonding primer isn't only about absorption — it also gives the topcoat something consistent to grip. Painting bare wood without it is the single most common reason stair paint chips at the nosing edge within the first year, regardless of how many topcoats go on after.
Stain doesn't get a film primer
Stain is designed to soak into open wood grain, so a film-forming primer would block it entirely. On blotch-prone woods (pine, birch, maple) a pre-stain wood conditioner is the equivalent prep step — it evens out absorption without sealing the surface.
Sheen changes slip risk, not just looks
Higher-gloss finishes are measurably more slippery underfoot, especially in socks or smooth-soled shoes, which is why most stair-specific floor enamels top out at satin or semi-gloss. A gloss finish is a common choice for risers and skirt boards, but a riskier one for the tread itself.

Common mistakes when painting or staining stairs
Most stair-finish complaints trace back to one of these five planning errors, not to a bad brush technique.
Skipping primer on bare wood
Paint applied straight to unprimed wood adheres poorly and chips first at the nosing edge — the highest-wear point on the whole stair — often within a single season of foot traffic.
Buying a full gallon "just in case"
A typical single flight only needs a quart or two total. A leftover gallon is wasted money and a can that dries out before the next touch-up — buy to the rounded container estimate, not a round number.
Choosing a high-gloss finish for treads
Gloss looks sharp in a photo but is measurably more slippery underfoot than satin or a stair-rated low-sheen enamel — a real safety tradeoff, not just a style choice.
Forgetting the open stringer or skirt board
An open, cut stringer or a raked skirt board along the wall is easy to overlook when eyeballing "the stairs" as just treads and risers — and it's real, visible square footage.
Recoating before the first coat is dry
Recoating too early traps solvent under the new layer, leading to tackiness or peeling later — the label's recoat window exists for a reason, even when the surface looks dry to the touch.
