Total rise is the full vertical climb from finished grade or lower floor to the upper finished floor. Width is the clear width of the stair, not counting any side walls or cheek walls.

Step Count

Step Wedge Volume

V = 0.5 × Width × Total Run × Rise

In profile, poured steps form a right-triangle wedge. Halving the width-run-rise box is the standard simplified method for estimating a stepped pour before waste.

Base Slab Volume

V = Width × Total Run × Base Thickness

The wedge sits on a footing slab, typically 4 inches, bearing on compacted fill or undisturbed soil. This is a flat rectangular volume, added on top of the wedge.

Total Volume, With Waste

V(cy) = (V_wedge + V_base) × (1+Waste%) ÷ 27

Waste covers form leakage, minor over-excavation and spillage — 10% is a common allowance for a small stepped pour, higher for hand-mixed or hard-to-access jobs.

Total Installed Cost

Total = Material + Base Prep + Rebar + Labor + Finish + Access

Worked example

Walking through a real 21" entry stoop

Same five calculations, filled in step by step, for a 3-step, 42"-wide entry stoop climbing 21" — the default this calculator loads with, poured ready-mix by a professional crew.

Step count and riser

21" total rise, targeting a 7.5" riser: 21 ÷ 7.5 = 2.8, which rounds to 3 steps. Re-dividing gives the actual riser: 21 ÷ 3 = 7.00" per step.

Tread depth and total run

Using the 2R+T comfort rule: 25 − (2 × 7) = 11" tread, comfortably above the 10" floor. With 2 treads (one fewer than the step count), total run is 2 × 11 = 22" (1.83 ft).

Wedge and base volume

Wedge: 0.5 × 3.5 ft × 1.83 ft × 1.75 ft ≈ 5.61 cu ft. Base slab at 4" thick over the same 3.5 × 1.83 ft footprint adds 2.14 cu ft. Raw total: 7.75 cu ft.

Waste and cubic yards

Add 10% waste: 7.75 × 1.10 ≈ 8.53 cu ft, which converts to just 0.32 cubic yards — a genuinely small pour.

Material cost — where the minimum charge kicks in

At $175/cy, 0.32 cy of concrete would only cost about $55 — but almost every ready-mix supplier has a minimum load charge (default $150 here), and $55 is below it. The calculator uses the $150 minimum, not the smaller volume-based number. Add 3 steps of rebar at $15 each ($45) and professional labor at $150/step ($450), and the total comes to $645 — $215 per step.

This is exactly why small step pours almost always cost more per cubic yard than a driveway or patio slab — the minimum load charge doesn't scale down with volume. A step estimate can be arithmetically correct and still miss the two or three things that actually decide the final invoice.

Why small pours cost more per yard

Effective $/cy = max(Material, MinLoad) ÷ Volume

Ready-mix trucks are dispatched per load, not per cubic yard, so most suppliers charge a flat minimum (often called a short-load fee) for orders under about 1 cubic yard. A 3-step stoop can easily come in at a third of a yard — meaning the effective price per yard is several times the quoted rate.

When steps need rebar

Reinforcement flag: Rise > ~24" (rule of thumb)

Taller step runs, steps over unsupported fill, and anything in a freeze-thaw climate are commonly reinforced to resist cracking and spalling. The exact trigger point is set by local code and soil conditions, not a universal number — treat this calculator's reinforcement checkbox as a budgeting default, and verify the requirement with your local building department before skipping it.

Bagged vs. ready-mix breakeven

Breakeven ≈ 1–1.5 cubic yards

Below roughly a yard, bagged concrete usually costs less than paying a ready-mix minimum load — but it's also considerably more labor to mix by hand. Above that volume, the math flips in favor of a truck almost every time.

Precast vs. formed, past the unit price

Total = Unit Price + Setting Labor + Base Prep

Precast steps trade a lower labor bill for a higher material bill, plus a delivery or crane consideration on heavier units. Formed concrete trades higher labor for more flexibility on width, finish, and integrating with an existing stoop or landing.

This is a budgeting tool, not a bid. A structural engineer's review is worth it for any step run bearing on fill, spanning a void, or over roughly 4 feet of total rise.
