This tool is only as good as the defaults you keep or replace. Five minutes of local research before you use it turns a rough guess into a usable budget number.
Count your steps
Count every riser in the flight, top to bottom, including the bottom step onto the finished floor. This is the single number the whole estimate scales from.
Pick shape and finish package
Straight stairs are the cheapest baseline; L-shaped, U-shaped and spiral stairs carry a complexity markup for framing and layout. Basic, Mid-Range and Premium set default material and labor rates per step — or switch to Custom and enter your own contractor quote.
Add railing, removal and permit costs
These are commonly left out of a first mental estimate and are the biggest reason a homeowner's guess and a contractor's invoice don't match. Toggle each one on if it applies to your project.

Nothing on this page is a black box. Here's exactly what runs when you change a number.
Material Cost
Step count times the per-step material rate for your chosen finish package, or your own Custom rate.
Labor Cost
Base per-step labor rate, scaled up for stair shape (L/U/spiral cost more to frame and cut) and for a higher-cost local labor market.
Railing Cost
Approximate linear footage of the open side of the stair, multiplied by a per-foot rate that varies by railing material.
Total Installed Cost
All cost components summed, then a contingency percentage layered on top for waste and minor scope changes.

Material and base labor
14 steps at the Mid-Range default of $125/step material gives $1,750. Base labor at $95/step gives 14 × 95 = $1,330 before any multipliers are applied.
Complexity multiplier hits labor, not material
An L-shaped stair carries a 1.20× labor multiplier for the extra layout, landing framing and cutting. $1,330 × 1.20 = $1,596. At National Average labor market, the regional multiplier stays 1.0× and doesn't change this further.
Railing, removal and permit
Assuming roughly 11.7 running feet of open side (14 steps × a 10" tread ÷ 12), a wood railing at $55/ft adds ≈$642. Removing the old staircase adds the flat default of $450, and the permit fee adds $250.
Subtotal, contingency, and the final number
Subtotal: 1,750 + 1,596 + 642 + 450 + 250 = $4,688. A 10% contingency adds $469, for a Total of about $5,157 — roughly $368 per step and, over a ~35 sq ft footprint, about $147 per sq ft.
Notice that removal and permit costs together added over $700 — nearly 15% of the total — despite neither one touching the staircase itself. Skipping them is the single most common reason a rough mental estimate comes in low.

What actually drives stair installation cost
Two staircases with the same step count can land tens of percent apart. These four factors explain most of the gap.
Shape and complexity

Regional labor market
Skilled finish-carpentry labor rates vary enormously by metro area and can swing a labor line item by 50% or more between a low-cost region and a major coastal city. This is the single most common reason two online estimates disagree.
Permits can trigger code upgrades
Pulling a permit on an older staircase sometimes surfaces other required fixes — a non-compliant railing height, missing guard rail, or inadequate headroom — that weren't part of the original quote. Budget a contingency specifically for this possibility on older homes.
Removal is a separate line item
Demolishing and hauling away an existing staircase is priced separately from installing the new one, and is easy to forget when comparing a "new stairs" quote against this calculator's defaults.
These are planning-stage estimates for budgeting purposes, not a binding quote. Structural repairs uncovered mid-project (rotted framing, undersized stringers) are not modeled here and can add materially to a final invoice.
Common mistakes when budgeting a stair installation
Most "the quote came in way higher than I expected" stories trace back to one of these five planning gaps, not to a dishonest contractor.
Forgetting removal of the old staircase
Demo and haul-away of the existing stair is almost always a separate line item, not something bundled invisibly into "installation."
Not budgeting for permit-triggered upgrades
Pulling a permit on an older home can surface railing, guard or headroom fixes that weren't in the original scope — budget a contingency for this on any pre-code staircase.
Using a national-average rate in a high-cost metro
Skilled labor pricing varies sharply by region. Always swap in a local rate under Advanced before treating a total as a real budget number.
Pricing railing as part of "the stairs"
Railing material and labor is commonly quoted and installed separately, and can add 15–30% to a project depending on material — cable and glass in particular.
Underestimating an L or U-shaped layout
A turn adds a landing, more layout time and often a steeper stringer cut — treating it like a straight run of the same step count under-budgets labor.
Assuming the quote covers hidden structural repair
Rotted framing or an undersized stringer discovered once the old stair comes out is a common source of change orders that no cost calculator can predict ahead of demo.
