Getting an accurate railing takeoff before you price it
This calculator is only as accurate as the length and layout you feed it. Get those two right first — the material choice matters less than most people think.
Measure the rake length, not the floor distance
Run a tape along the slope of the stair — top of the top rail to where it lands at the bottom newel — not the horizontal floor footprint. On a 14-step flight this is routinely 15-20% longer than the run measured on the floor.
Count flights and direction changes separately
A straight run needs two posts. A stair with a landing turn needs a third post at the corner, even though the total linear footage barely changed. Enter flights and turns in the Advanced panel so the post count reflects the layout, not just the length.
Pick the material before the quality tier
Material drives most of the cost swing — cable and glass typically run 2-4x painted wood. Quality tier (builder/mid/premium) is a smaller adjustment within whichever material you've already picked.
Decide if removal is part of the job
Replacing an existing railing almost always means demo and haul-away first. If you're quoting new construction with no existing railing, leave that box unchecked to avoid overstating the estimate.

Material Cost
Rail, shoe, cap and top/bottom track material for the chosen railing type, scaled by the builder/mid/premium quality tier.
Labor Cost
Installation labor per linear foot, bumped up for winders or curved layouts that take longer to template and cut.
Newel Posts
Two posts (top and bottom) per straight flight, plus one additional post at every corner or landing turn where the rail changes direction.
Infill Count
Balusters and composite/vinyl pickets use this spacing formula. Cable uses run count over guard height instead; glass uses panel count over panel width — see the Cost Drivers section.
Total Installed Cost
Waste/contingency is applied only to material-side costs — labor, removal and permit fees are entered as-is.

Newel posts
One flight and one landing turn: 2×1 + 1 = 3 posts. At $85/post [VERIFY], that's 3 × $85 = $255. Note this post is added because of the turn, not the length — a straight 16 ft run would only need 2 posts and $170.
Balusters
16 ft = 192". At the default 4" spacing plus a 1.5" baluster width, that's round(192 ÷ 5.5) = 35 positions, minus the 3 posts already occupying rail length = 32 balusters. At $9 each [VERIFY]: 32 × $9 = $288.
Waste, subtotal & total
Material-side costs (material + posts + balusters) = $720+$255+$288 = $1,263. A 10% waste/contingency adds $126.30. With labor added: $1,263 + $126.30 + $560 = $1,949.30 total, or about $122/ft. No removal or permit fee applied in this example.
This is exactly why a landing turn nudges the total up even when the linear footage barely changes — the extra post is a fixed hit, not a per-foot one. Two 16 ft flights joined by a landing cost noticeably more than one continuous 16 ft run, even at identical total length.

What actually moves a railing quote up or down
Two railings of the same length and material can price out very differently. These four factors are usually why.
The 4" sphere rule sets a cost floor
Wider decorative balusters don't reduce cost the way people expect — code still caps the gap between them at 4", so a wider baluster profile just means slightly more balusters spaced slightly tighter, not fewer of them.
Cable runs are priced by height, not length
Unlike balusters, the number of horizontal cable lines is driven by guard height (typically 36"–42") divided by cable spacing — a 3-foot-tall guard needs roughly the same number of runs whether the railing is 8 ft or 40 ft long, but each run's material cost scales with length.
Blocking and framing add hidden cost
Newel posts anchored into open stair stringers or deck rim joists often need added blocking [VERIFY: typical blocking/framing add-on cost per post] that a simple per-linear-foot quote can miss, especially on a retrofit where the original framing wasn't sized for a heavier iron, cable or glass system.
Permits track material, not just presence of a railing

Common mistakes when budgeting a railing job
Most railing budget overruns trace back to one of these five planning errors, not to a bad contractor bid.
Measuring floor distance instead of rake length
The sloped run along the stair is longer than the horizontal footprint — pricing off the floor measurement quietly under-quotes every material and labor line.
Forgetting landings need their own post
A direction change adds a fixed-cost corner post that a simple length × rate calculation misses entirely — see the worked example above.
Assuming wider balusters cost less
Code caps the clear opening at 4" regardless of baluster width, so switching to chunkier iron balusters rarely cuts the baluster count by much.
Skipping removal cost on a replacement
Budgeting only the new railing while forgetting demo, disposal and haul-away of the old one is one of the most common gaps in a DIY estimate.
Averaging a single "per foot" price across materials
Cable and glass commonly run 2-4x painted wood per linear foot — lumping every material into one flat rate throws early budgets off before a single quote comes in.
