How to measure

Measuring your stairs before you order padding

Padding is bought by the linear yard, but it's consumed step by step — a floor-to-floor tape measurement alone will undershoot what you actually need.

Count your steps

Count every riser in the flight, including the top step into the upper floor. This is the multiplier for everything below — get it exact, not estimated.

Measure one tread and one riser

Most residential flights use a uniform tread and riser, so one accurate measurement of each is usually enough. If your stairs vary step to step, measure the largest of each and use that as your planning number.

Confirm your runner width

Check the product spec sheet or the runner you already own. This decides your pad's cut width and whether you'll need to seam two lengths of padding for a wide runner.

Pick waterfall or captured

Look at how the runner is installed at each nosing. If it drapes straight down the riser face without tucking in, it's waterfall. If it disappears into a gap at the back of the tread, it's captured (French cap).

Per-Step Pad Length

Waterfall: T + R + 2″
Captured: T + 1″

Waterfall padding wraps tread and riser plus a wrap allowance at the nosing. [VERIFY: confirm the 2″/1″ wrap allowances with your installer — these vary by pad thickness and nosing profile.]

Raw Total Length

L = (Steps × Per-Step Length) + Landing

Sum every step's pad piece, then add one landing-depth piece if the flight ends at a top landing that also gets padded.

Waste-Adjusted Length

L′ = L × (1 + Waste% ) + (Winders × 6″)

Applies your waste allowance, then adds a flat per-winder waste bump for angled, pie-shaped treads. [VERIFY: confirm the 6″ per-winder waste figure — it depends on the winder angle.]

Linear Yards

Yards = ceil( L′ ÷ 36 × 4 ) ÷ 4

Converts inches to yards, then rounds up to the nearest quarter yard — most suppliers won't cut smaller increments.

Pad Cut Width

W = Runner Width − (2 × Inset)

The width you actually cut the padding to, narrower than the runner on both edges so the tackless strip bites into wood, not foam.

Roll Lengths Needed

Runs = ceil( Runner Width ÷ Roll Width )

If your runner is wider than the padding roll, you need this many parallel lengths seamed together — and that multiplies your yardage by the same number.

Worked example

Walking through a real 14-step flight

A 14-step flight with a 10" tread and 7.71" riser — the same figures our Stair Rise and Run Calculator produces for a 108" total rise — run through a 32" waterfall-style runner.

Per-step pad length

Waterfall style: 10" tread + 7.71" riser + 2" wrap allowance = 19.71" per step. No landing padded in this example.

Raw total length

14 steps × 19.71" = 275.94" of padding before any waste is added.

Waste-adjusted length

At a 12% waste allowance: 275.94" × 1.12 = 309.05". With zero winders entered, no extra waste bump applies here.

Linear yards to order

309.05" ÷ 36 = 8.585 yd, rounded up to the nearest quarter yard: 8.75 yards. At a 32" runner width, the pad cuts to 30" wide (1" inset per side) and fits inside a single 36" roll width — no seaming needed.

Now the interaction: bump the runner width alone to 42" for a wider "hotel style" look, and nothing about the step count or riser changes — but the runner no longer fits a standard 36" roll. The Roll Lengths Needed result jumps from 1 to 2, and the compliance chip flips to fail, because two parallel lengths have to be seamed together to reach 42" of coverage. That doubles the yardage even though the stair itself is identical.

This calculator focuses on yardage, not density selection — but the wrong density is the second most common padding complaint after wrong yardage, so it's worth a quick check.

Reference only — always confirm current product specs with your padding manufacturer. Stair pad is intentionally firmer and thinner than rug or wall-to-wall pad; soft, thick cushion is not recommended on stairs regardless of density class.

Beyond yardage

Roll seaming, thickness limits & winder waste

A yardage number can be technically correct and still leave you short at install time over these three details.

When you need a seam

Runs = ceil( Runner Width ÷ Roll Width )

Standard padding rolls top out around 36–45" wide. A 42–48" "hotel style" runner needs two parallel lengths of pad seamed edge to edge — the calculator's Roll Lengths Needed result and its compliance chip flag this automatically.

Thickness at the crotch

Captured install → thinner pad

On a captured (French cap) install, the runner has to fold cleanly into the gap at the back of each tread. Padding that's too thick there prevents a crisp tuck and leaves a visible gap or a lumpy nosing line. Winders and pie steps

Extra waste ≈ 6″ per winder [VERIFY]

Angled treads on a turn can't be cut from a rectangular pad piece as efficiently as a straight run, so each winder step burns noticeably more material than the standard waste allowance accounts for.

Landing coverage

A padded landing at the top of the flight is a separate rectangular piece, not part of the per-step formula — it's easy to forget when tallying yardage from a supplier's per-step chart.

These are planning-stage estimates. Always confirm final yardage and pad spec with the installer or retailer cutting your order — stair padding has no residential code minimum, so "correct" here means matching your product and installer's actual requirements.

Do I actually need padding under a stair runner?
It's not required, but a firm, stair-specific pad adds cushioning underfoot, reduces wear on the runner backing, and softens noise — most professional installs include it unless the runner already has an attached cushion backing.
How wide should padding be compared to the runner?
Cut padding narrower than the runner on both edges, commonly by roughly 1" per side, so the tackless strip grips solid wood along the outer edges instead of compressible pad.
What's the difference between waterfall and captured (French cap) padding?

Do I need padding for a top landing?
