What to measure before you cut a floor opening
This calculator only works from the same numbers a real framing crew works from. Get these four right first.
Total rise, floor to floor
Plumb from the finished floor at the bottom of the stair to the finished floor at the top. If you already ran the Stair Rise and Run Calculator, this is the same number.
Riser height and tread depth
Use your finalized step design, not a rough guess — the opening length is sensitive to the stair's angle, which comes directly from these two numbers.
The upper floor's framing depth
Measure or confirm from the plans what's actually framing the floor you're cutting into — joist depth plus subfloor thickness. This is the floor above the stair, not the floor at the bottom.
Your headroom target
Leave it on Auto for the 80" IRC residential minimum, or enter a taller custom target if you want more comfortable clearance than the code floor.
The five formulas behind every result
The opening isn't just "however long the stair is" — it's the point where the headroom line clears the underside of the upper floor, worked backward from the top.
Header Setback
How far back from the bottom of the stair the header can start. Rise is total rise, D is floor assembly depth, H is headroom target, R and T are the riser and tread that set the stair's slope.
Opening Length
Total run is the horizontal distance the stair actually covers. Subtracting the setback point — and adding any extra buffer you want — gives the rough opening length.
Opening Width
Clear stair width plus an allowance on each side for drywall, trim and ordinary framing tolerance.
Joists Interrupted (approx.)
A rough count of how many regularly-spaced joists the opening crosses. Treat this as a planning estimate — confirm the real header and trimmer sizing separately.
Opening Area
Total footprint of the rough opening in square feet — useful for comparing against available floor space or an existing stairwell.
Walking through a real 108" basement stair
Same 108" rise this site's Rise and Run Calculator uses as its default — 14 steps, a 7.71" actual riser, and a 10" tread once the 2R+T rule gets floored at code minimum.
Stair geometry, reused
108" rise ÷ 7.5" target riser rounds to 14 steps, giving an actual riser of 7.71" and, after the 2R+T rule floors at the 10" IRC minimum, 13 treads at 10" each for a 130" total run — identical to this site's Rise and Run Calculator example.
Header setback
With an 80" headroom target and a 2×10 + subfloor assembly (10" deep): X = (108 − 10 − 80) × (10 ÷ 7.71) = 18 × 1.297 ≈ 23.3" from the bottom nosing.
Opening length
L = 130" − 23.3" = 106.7", with no extra buffer added. That's the minimum rough opening length this flight needs in the upper floor's joists.
Width, joists and area
At a 36" clear stair width plus 1" clearance per side, the opening is 38" wide. At 16" O.C. joist spacing that crosses roughly 8 joists, for a total rough opening area of about 28.1 sq ft.
Now swap only the floor assembly to an 11-7/8" I-joist (12.625" deep): the opening length grows to roughly 110.1" — over 3" longer for the same stair, just from a deeper upper floor. Stack a taller 82" headroom target on top of that same I-joist and the opening pushes to about 112.7" — the two advanced inputs compound rather than cancel out.
Common upper-floor assembly depths
The dropdown above uses these standard depths. Dimensional lumber sizes are fixed nationally; engineered I-joist depths vary slightly by manufacturer, so confirm from your own spec sheet.

Header, trimmers & framing the opening
Knowing how long and wide to cut the hole is step one. Actually framing it safely is a separate job this calculator doesn't do for you.
Rough opening vs. finished opening
Everything above is the rough framed opening. Once drywall, trim and any stairwell guard go in, the finished clear opening is smaller — this is the single most common source of "why is my opening tighter than the calculator said" complaints.
Double headers and trimmers
Both ends of the opening typically get a doubled header carrying the cut (interrupted) joists, supported by doubled trimmer joists running parallel to the field joists. Exact ply count and species/grade come from a span table, not this calculator.
Which floor actually matters
It's easy to grab the framing depth of the floor you're standing on by habit. The header that constrains headroom lives in the upper floor's joists — using the wrong floor's depth is a common and easy-to-miss error.
Multi-flight and turned stairs
An L-shaped, U-shaped, or winder stair has a headroom line that changes direction at the turn. Straight-run math like this can't check that condition — treat each straight flight separately and verify the turn itself by eye or with a code checker.

Common mistakes when sizing a stair opening
Most "the stair doesn't fit the hole" problems on site trace back to one of these five planning errors.
Using the wrong floor's framing depth
The header lives in the upper floor. Plugging in the lower floor's joist depth by mistake understates how far back the opening actually needs to start.
Confusing rough opening with finished opening
Drywall, trim, and any guard or half-wall at the stairwell edge all eat into the rough-framed dimension. Order materials to the rough number, not the finished one.
Measuring headroom from the wrong line
Headroom is measured from the nosing line — the line connecting tread leading edges — not from the tread surface itself and not from an adjacent wall.
Treating a landing stair as one straight flight
Once total rise passes 147", code requires an intermediate landing. This calculator's formula assumes a single uninterrupted flight — a landing stair needs each flight sized separately.
Cutting before confirming joist direction
The opening's long dimension needs to run perpendicular to the joists it interrupts, with header and trimmer framing on solid bearing — check joist direction on the plan before anyone touches a saw.
Skipping the header/trimmer span check
A correctly-sized hole with an undersized header is still a failed inspection. Confirm the doubled header and trimmer framing against a span table once you have the opening dimensions.
