Measuring before you build
The calculator is only as good as the height and pet details you feed it. Get the climb height right, then be honest about your pet's size and mobility — this drives every number after it.
Measure total climb height
Measure straight down from the top surface your pet needs to reach — mattress top, sofa cushion, tailgate lip, or back seat floor — to the finished floor below. Compress the mattress or cushion slightly, since your pet's weight will do the same.
Pick the pet profile that fits
Choose by size, not just breed name — a 12 lb terrier and a 12 lb dachshund need different treatment because of back-injury risk, which is why Mobility is a separate setting from size.
Note your available floor space
Measure the clear floor alongside the bed, sofa, or vehicle. A ramp needs several times more horizontal room than a stair to hit a safe incline — this is usually what decides stairs vs. ramp in practice.
Read the compliance chips
Green means the result sits inside the commonly cited comfort range for your pet's profile. Red means the riser, tread, or incline is likely too demanding — reconsider available space, pet profile, or build type before you cut anything.

Stair Step Count
Climb height divided by the target riser for your pet's profile, rounded to the nearest whole step — you can't build a fractional step.
Actual Riser Height
The rounding above means the real riser rarely matches the target exactly. This is the height every step gets built to, uniformly.
Ramp Length & Incline
Ramp surface length from the Pythagorean triangle formed by climb height and available run; incline angle from the same two legs.

Step count
24" climb height, targeting this profile's default 5" riser: 24 ÷ 5 = 4.8, which rounds to 5 steps. You can't cut a fractional step, so the calculator always rounds to the nearest whole number here.
Actual riser height
Re-divide climb height by that whole step count: 24 ÷ 5 = 4.8" per riser — comfortably under the 5" max for a healthy medium dog.
Run and incline angle
4 treads (one fewer than the step count) at this profile's 9" default depth gives a total run of 36". The angle works out to atan(4.8 ÷ 9) ≈ 28.1° — past this profile's 25° comfort limit, even though the riser and tread checks both pass individually.
This is exactly why the incline chip can fail even when riser and tread both pass — the checks interact, and a compact footprint compressed into few steps is the usual cause. Building to 6 steps instead of 5, or freeing up a few more inches of run, brings the angle back into range. For comparison, building a ramp instead at this same 24" rise would need roughly 51" of run to stay under 25° — about 15" more floor space than the stair's footprint, which is the typical stairs-vs-ramp tradeoff.

Joint health, IVDD & getting the surface right
A stair or ramp can pass every riser and incline check and still hurt your pet if these three things get overlooked.
Why jumping is the real risk
The whole point of a pet stair or ramp is avoiding the jump on and off furniture or a vehicle — repeated impact is a known contributor to hip, elbow, and spinal problems over a dog's lifetime, especially in larger and long-backed breeds.
IVDD-prone breeds need gentler builds
Dachshunds, corgis, basset hounds, and beagles are predisposed to intervertebral disc disease. For these breeds, set Mobility to Senior/Joint-Sensitive regardless of age, and favor a ramp over stairs when floor space allows.
Traction matters as much as angle
A correctly angled ramp with a slick surface is still dangerous. Carpet, non-slip rubber matting, or grip tape on the tread and ramp surface — and on the landing floor at both ends — matters at least as much as the geometry.
Anchor it, don't just place it
An unsecured stair or ramp that shifts, tips, or slides mid-climb undoes every safety benefit of the correct angle. Rubber feet, wall bracing, or a lip that hooks over the furniture edge all help keep it planted.
These are planning-stage guidelines, not veterinary advice. For a pet recovering from surgery, with diagnosed joint disease, or a breed with known spinal risk, confirm the right incline and step height with your vet before building.
Common mistakes when sizing a pet stair or ramp
Most pet stairs that end up unused, or that cause a fall, trace back to one of these five planning errors.
Using human stair proportions
A 7–7.75" riser sized for a person's leg is far too tall for most dogs and cats. Pet risers need to scale down to the pet's leg length, not to code minimums built for people.
Building a ramp steeper than the pet can manage
Squeezing a ramp into limited floor space often means accepting too steep an incline. If the available run can't hit a safe angle, a stepped stair or a folding ramp with a mid-landing may fit better than a straight ramp.
Ignoring breed-specific back risk
Treating a healthy-looking dachshund or corgi as a standard "small dog" skips the single most important setting for that breed — set Mobility to Senior/Joint-Sensitive regardless of the pet's age.
Skipping a non-slip surface
Bare wood or smooth laminate on the treads or ramp surface turns a correctly sized build into a slipping hazard. Add carpet, rubber matting, or grip tape before first use, not after a fall.
Leaving a gap at the top
A stair or ramp that doesn't sit flush against the mattress, cushion, or tailgate leaves a step-across gap at exactly the point a pet is least stable. Match the top height and push it snug against the furniture or vehicle.
Sizing width to breed average, not this pet's weight
A "large dog" ramp width built for a 45 lb average misses a 90 lb pet of the same breed. Enter actual weight in Advanced so the width recommendation accounts for it.
