Measuring a stair for an ADA compliance check
ADA reviewers measure from specific reference lines, not just "top to bottom." Get these four measurements right before you trust any result.
Riser height, leading edge to leading edge
Measure vertically between the leading edges (nosings) of two adjacent treads — not from floor to floor and not from the top of one tread to the top of the next if nosings overhang. Do this for every riser in the flight, not just one.
Tread depth, nosing to nosing
Measure horizontally from the leading edge of one tread to the leading edge of the tread above it. This is the ADA measurement point — it's different from measuring the flat, walkable part of the tread alone.
Handrail height, from the nosing line — not the floor
Measure vertically from the top of the gripping surface down to an imaginary line drawn across the tips of the nosings, not down to the tread surface or the floor below. This is the single most common measuring error on this checklist.
Gripping surface size and wall clearance
For a round rail, measure outside diameter. For anything else — flat bar, square tube, wood cap — measure the full perimeter and the largest cross-section dimension. Then measure the gap between the rail and any wall or guard behind it.

Riser Height Range
ADA 504.2. This is stricter than most residential comfort defaults — a riser built to a 7.5" residential target will fail this check outright.
Tread Depth Minimum
ADA 504.2, measured nosing to nosing. One inch deeper than the typical 10" residential code minimum.
Handrail Mounting Height
ADA 505.4, measured vertically above the stair nosing line, held consistent for the full run including landings.
Handrail Extensions
ADA 505.10.2 / 505.10.3. The top extension is a fixed 12" minimum; the bottom extension is not fixed — it scales with your tread depth.
Gripping Surface Sizing
ADA 505.7. Round rails and non-round profiles (flat bar, square cap) are each checked against their own limit.
Walking through a real public stairway
A 7" riser, 13" tread, 36" handrail with a 1.5" round grip — a common commercial egress stair layout — checked against every ADA provision this calculator covers.
Riser height
7" sits exactly at the ADA 504.2 maximum, and above the 4" minimum — passes. Worth noting: this same 7" riser would also pass IRC's residential 7.75" maximum, but a stair built to IRC's typical 7.5" comfort target would fail this ADA check, since ADA's ceiling is a half-inch lower.
Tread depth
13" clears the 11" ADA minimum with room to spare — passes, and comfortably exceeds the 10" residential minimum too.
Handrail height & grip
36", measured from the nosing line, sits mid-range in the 34"–38" band — passes. A 1.5" round grip falls inside the 1.25"–2" circular range — passes.
Handrail extensions — where the interaction happens
Top extension needs 12" minimum, flat, beginning above the first riser nosing — straightforward. But the bottom extension isn't a fixed number: ADA 505.10.3 sets it at one tread depth beyond the last nosing, sloped. With a 13" tread, that's a 13" bottom extension, not 12". A rail shop that defaults to "12 inches at both ends" — a habit carried over from ramp details — comes up 1" short here and fails inspection on a stair that otherwise passes every other check.
This is exactly why the bottom-extension result recalculates every time you change tread depth — it's the one ADA number that isn't a fixed constant, and it's the one most often built wrong.
ADA vs. IRC vs. IBC, side by side
These three code systems overlap but aren't identical. A stair can pass one and fail another — know which one actually applies to your project.

Handrail extensions, uniformity & when ADA actually applies
A stair can pass every riser and tread check and still fail inspection on three things this section covers — extension geometry, uniformity enforcement, and whether ADA 504 was ever triggered in the first place.
The bottom extension isn't 12"
Unlike the top extension (a flat 12" minimum) and unlike ramp handrails (12" at both ends), a stair's bottom extension under 505.10.3 continues at the slope of the stair for a distance equal to one tread depth beyond the last riser nosing. Uniformity has no ADA number — but your building code does
ADA 504.2 requires "uniform riser heights and uniform tread depths" but the Standards themselves don't state a numeric tolerance. In practice, the adopted building code doing the enforcing (IRC, IBC, or a state code) supplies that number — commonly 3/8" — so an ADA-focused review still needs to check against whichever code has jurisdiction.
Does ADA even apply to this stair?
ADA 504 applies to interior and exterior stairs that are part of a required means of egress in new construction. Detention/correctional non-public stairs, aisle stairs in assembly seating, and alternating-tread devices are exempted. In alterations, a stair connected by an accessible route elsewhere (ramp or elevator) may only need to meet the handrail provisions, not the full tread/riser geometry.
ADA rarely reaches single-family homes
ADA Standards generally govern places of public accommodation and commercial facilities — not a private single-family home. A homeowner's interior stair is typically governed by the locally adopted residential code (IRC or a state variant) instead. This calculator is built for the public/commercial case where ADA 504/505 is in play.
These are planning-stage checks, not a certified accessibility survey. A project with mixed occupancies, phased alterations, or a state code that's stricter than the federal ADA Standards should get a licensed accessibility consultant's sign-off.
Common mistakes when planning an ADA-compliant stair
Most failed accessibility inspections trace back to one of these six errors — not to bad carpentry or poor materials.
Building to IRC's 7.75" max instead of ADA's 7"
A riser that's fully legal under residential code can still fail an ADA review on the exact same stair if it's part of a public means of egress — the two ceilings aren't the same number.
Flat 12" extensions at both ends
Copying the ramp handrail detail — 12" flat at top and bottom — under-extends the bottom rail on any stair with a tread deeper than 12", which is most of them.
Measuring handrail height from the floor
ADA measures handrail height from the nosing line, not the tread surface or the floor below. Measuring from the wrong reference line can put an otherwise-correct rail outside the 34"–38" band on paper.
Oversized decorative cap rails
A wide, flat-topped wood cap rail often exceeds the 2.25" max cross-section for non-circular grips, even when its perimeter measurement looks fine — check both numbers, not just one.
Assuming ADA applies to every stair on site
A back-of-house stair that isn't part of a required means of egress, or a stair with an accessible ramp/elevator alternate, may not trigger full 504 compliance — confirm applicability before designing to the tightest standard by default.
Skipping the wall clearance check
A handrail mounted too close to a wall or guard fails the 1.5" clearance rule even if the rail itself is perfectly sized — this is easy to miss because it's a gap, not a dimension of the rail.
