Measuring your opening before you calculate
This calculator is only as accurate as the width you feed it — and for anything but a plain rectangular doorway, one measurement usually isn't enough.
Measure the opening width
Hold a tape measure wall-to-wall (or wall-to-banister) at the height you plan to mount the gate's top rail — not at the floor, where baseboards or a newel post base can throw the number off.
Measure the opposite end if the walls aren't parallel
Common at the top of an open staircase, where a banister or an angled half-wall widens or narrows the opening from one side to the other. Enter both readings in Advanced and the calculator uses the larger one.
Note the baseboard or trim depth
Pressure-mounted gates rely on flush contact with both walls. Thick trim can leave the pads resting on wood instead of wall, unless you add baseboard spacer pads.
Choose the location honestly
Top-of-stairs vs. everywhere else changes which mount type is actually safe — not just which one is more convenient to install. Read the compliance chips before you buy, not after.

Required Width
When you enter a second measurement for a tapered opening, the calculator uses whichever reading is larger — the gate frame has to close against the widest point or a gap remains at that end.
Gate Size Class
Typical stock pressure-mount gates cluster around 26–38"; extra-wide models with extensions commonly stretch toward roughly 62" before you're into custom territory. [VERIFY: the 53" Standard/Wide split is an interpolated estimate — confirm against current catalog widths.]
Extension Kits Needed
Only kicks in once the opening exceeds a typical 38" standard-gate maximum. Rounds up — a kit is a fixed width, so a partial need still costs a full kit.
Max Width After Extensions
The largest opening your base gate plus kits can actually cover. Should always land at or above your required width, or you're one kit short.
Mount Type Decision
This isn't a width calculation, it's a hard override: location decides the safe mount type before width ever gets a vote — the same way a code minimum overrides a comfort formula elsewhere on this site.
Walking through a real 43.25" stairwell opening
Same checks, filled in step by step, for a gate going at the top of an open staircase with a slightly tapered wall — the default this calculator loads with.
Measure both ends
42.5" at the floor-height reading, 43.25" at the opposite end near the banister. Since they aren't equal, the calculator takes the larger figure — 43.25" required width — so the gate frame fully closes against the wider point.
Check the size class
43.25" falls above the 38" standard-gate maximum but under 53", landing it in the Wide class. That means an extension kit is required — a standard, out-of-the-box gate won't reach.
Count extension kits
(43.25 − 38) ÷ 4 = 1.31, which rounds up to 2 kits since a partial kit isn't sold. That gives a max adjustable width of 38 + (2 × 4) = 46" — comfortably past the 43.25" required width, with margin for walls that aren't perfectly plumb.
Apply the mount-type override
The opening is technically wide enough to shop pressure-mounted extra-wide models — but because this gate is going at the top of the stairs, the calculator recommends hardware-mounted only regardless of what width math alone would suggest. Width and mount type are two separate questions, and location wins the second one every time.
Check the taper
The two readings differ by 0.75" — under the roughly 1" comfort margin this calculator flags, so no angle-wall adapter is needed here. Had that gap been 1.5" or more, an angle or pivot hardware kit would be the safer call.
This is exactly why a "Wide, pressure-capable" width can still finish with a hardware-only recommendation — size class and mount type are computed independently, and location is allowed to override width every time.

Mounting type, baseboards, banisters & the bottom gap
A gate can be exactly the right width and still be the wrong gate for the spot — these four things decide that.
Pressure vs. hardware-mounted
Pressure-mounted gates hold position by squeezing outward against door casing or walls. A determined toddler leaning or climbing on one can work that tension loose over time, and at the top of a stairway that means a fall, not just a wandering child. Reserve pressure mounting for flat, same-level spots — doorways between rooms or the bottom of a stairway.
Baseboard & trim offset
If your baseboard sticks out more than roughly ¾", a pressure gate's pads may only touch the trim, not the solid wall behind it — a noticeably weaker grip. Baseboard spacer kits extend the contact pads out past the trim so the gate seats against the wall itself.
Banister & angled-wall mounting
[VERIFY: confirm against your specific kit] Hardware-mount kits for round banisters typically clamp posts up to roughly 4" in diameter without drilling into the wood. A meaningfully tapered opening usually needs the same style of pivoting hardware, since a straight gate frame can't seat flush against two non-parallel surfaces.
Bottom gap / entrapment

A rough on-site check is worth doing, but it isn't a substitute for buying a gate that's actually certified — this calculator can flag a gap you measured, it can't verify a product's compliance.

Common mistakes when sizing a child safety gate
Most gates that end up loose, gapped, or returned trace back to one of these five planning errors, not a bad product.
Measuring only one point of a tapered opening
Stairwell walls and banister posts are rarely perfectly parallel. A single reading can be an inch or more off from the widest point the gate frame actually needs to span.
Choosing pressure-mounted at the top of the stairs to avoid drilling
This is the single most common and most dangerous shortcut in gate shopping. A pressure fit that loosens over months is exactly the failure mode that matters most at the top of a flight.
Ignoring baseboard or trim depth
A gate rated for your opening's wall-to-wall width can still rock or gap if its pads are only reaching thick trim instead of the wall behind it.
Buying at the exact rated maximum with zero margin
Walls are rarely perfectly plumb. Leaving no slack between your required width and the gate's maximum rated width is asking for a return.
Picking a floor-bar gate for a high-traffic spot
Most pressure-mounted gates keep a bar across the floor even when open. At the top of stairs especially, that bar is a trip hazard for anyone carrying a child — a no-bar hardware-mounted gate avoids it.
