Measuring your opening before you calculate
A spiral stair is defined by a circle, not a run of floor space — three numbers decide everything else, and the diameter is usually the one that's actually constrained.
Find your total rise
Same as any stair: plumb from the finished floor you're leaving to the finished floor you're arriving at. Include finished flooring thickness on both ends.
Set the diameter your space actually allows
Measure the clear floor circle available — from the center of where the pole will land to the nearest wall, railing, or obstruction, doubled. This is usually the true constraint on a spiral design, not the rise.
Pick a center pole size
4" steel pipe is the most common residential choice. Wider poles reduce your clear walk width for the same outside diameter — check the Clear Walk Width result after changing this.

The five formulas behind every result
A spiral stair adds rotation to the same rise-and-run logic every stair uses. Here's exactly what runs when you change a number.
Step Count
Same rounding logic as a straight stair — you can't build a fractional step, so total rise divided by your target riser rounds to a whole number.
Actual Riser Height
The rounding above means the real riser is rarely the exact target. This is the number every riser gets cut to, uniformly, same as a straight run.
Rotation per Tread
How many degrees the stair sweeps for each tread. A tighter diameter or a taller total rotation both increase how sharply each tread turns underfoot.
Walkline Tread Depth
Arc length at the walkline, not at the pole — the walkline sits a fixed distance in from the outer edge, so this is where code actually measures tread depth.
Clear Walk Width
The usable radial walking path: outside radius minus the pole's radius minus whatever the handrail and balusters eat into on the outer edge.
Walking through a real 108" rise, 66" diameter
Same five formulas, filled in step by step, for a basement-to-main-floor spiral climbing 9 feet (108") through a 5'-6" diameter opening — the default this calculator loads with.
Step count
108" total rise, targeting a 9.25" riser: 108 ÷ 9.25 = 11.68, which rounds to 12 steps.
Actual riser height
Re-divide the total rise by that whole step count: 108 ÷ 12 = 9.0" per riser — comfortably under the commonly-cited 9.5" spiral maximum.
Rotation per tread
12 risers means 11 treads over a default 360° sweep: 360 ÷ 11 = 32.7° per tread.
Walkline tread depth & clear width
Outside radius is 33" (66" ÷ 2). At a 12" walkline offset, the walkline radius is 21". Arc length: 2π × 21 × (32.7 ÷ 360) ≈ 12.0" — well past the commonly-cited 7.5" minimum. With a 4" pole and 1.5" rail inset, clear walk width is 33 − 2 − 1.5 = 29.5".
This is exactly why diameter is the number to protect first: shrink this same design to a 48" outside diameter and the outer radius drops to 24", the walkline radius drops to 12", and the walkline tread depth falls to roughly 6.9" — below the commonly-cited minimum — even though the riser height still passes on its own. A tight floor opening fails the stair on tread depth long before it fails on riser height.

Headroom, center column & landing
A spiral can pass every riser and tread check and still fail inspection or feel wrong to climb over three things this section covers — how headroom actually gets measured, what the column has to carry, and how much floor you lose at the top.
Headroom isn't one number
On a straight stair, headroom is one worst-case measurement. On a spiral, clearance above each tread's leading edge changes as the stair turns under a joist, header, or sloped ceiling — measure at several points around the rotation, not just one.
The column carries everything
Unlike a stringer-framed stair, a spiral's center pole typically carries the full compressive load of every tread stacked on it, plus torsional twist from foot traffic. Pole diameter, wall thickness, and footing size are structural decisions, not just a fit check — get a stamped design for anything beyond a small kit stair.
Rough floor opening
The framed hole in the upper floor needs to be larger than the stair itself — typically a couple inches of clearance per side for trim, drywall return, and installation tolerance. This calculator's Rough Opening result uses a flat allowance; confirm the exact clearance with your stair supplier's install spec.
Rotation direction (handedness)
Which way a spiral turns isn't a math question, it's a fit-and-function one: it decides which hand trails the rail going up, and which quarter of the room the stair's widest treads land in. Most kit makers sell both configurations — pick based on the room layout, not the calculator.
These are planning-stage estimates, not a stamped structural design. Center-pole spiral stairs almost always ship as an engineered kit for exactly this reason — verify the manufacturer's load rating rather than field-designing the column yourself.
Common mistakes when planning a spiral staircase
Most spiral-stair complaints trace back to one of these five planning errors, not to bad fabrication.
Shrinking diameter without rechecking tread depth
Riser height alone can still pass code on a tight diameter while walkline tread depth quietly fails — as shown in the worked example above. Always recheck both after resizing.
Confusing outside diameter with clear walk width
A "5-foot spiral stair" has a 60" outside diameter, not a 60" walking path. The pole and handrail both eat into that number before anyone sets foot on it.
Assuming a spiral can be the only stair in the house
Many jurisdictions restrict spiral stairs to secondary access, a specific room area, or a limited occupant load rather than allowing them as a home's sole required exit. Confirm this before designing around one.
Checking headroom at only one point
Because the stair rotates under the floor structure above, the tightest headroom point often isn't where you'd expect. Walk the full rotation with a measurement, not just the bottom step.
Under-sizing the rough floor opening
The framed hole needs to clear the outside diameter plus trim and installation tolerance, not match it exactly. Cutting the opening to the stair's exact diameter is a common and costly framing mistake.
