Measuring for a newel post before you calculate
The calculator is only as accurate as the handrail height and post role you feed it. Get those two right first — everything else follows from them.
Confirm your target handrail height
Measure — or set your target — vertically from the tread nosing line (on a run) or the finished floor (at a landing) up to the top of the graspable handrail, not up to the top of the post itself.
Identify the post's role
A starting post at the base of the stair usually receives a raked rail through a gooseneck or turnout fitting and needs the long-point allowance. A landing, turn, or terminal post usually receives a level rail and doesn't.
Get your stair's rake angle
Only needed for a starting post. Pull it from your framing square, a digital angle finder on the stringer, or the Stair Angle / Pitch Calculator if you already know your riser and tread.
Confirm your mounting method
Surface bolt, bolt-through, or notched-and-housed each pull a different amount of post below the finished floor line. Check your newel anchor hardware's install sheet before trusting the default drop.

Long-Point Allowance
Extra height needed on the high side of a starting post so a gooseneck or turnout can transition the rail from the raked angle down to level. Zero for landing and terminal posts.
Long Point / Short Point
The short point is where the level rail height lands; the long point is the taller corner the angled cut climbs to. On a level post, both are equal.
Finished Post Height
The headline number: the tallest point of the post above the finished floor, before any cap is added.
Total Blank Length
What you actually need to buy: finished height, plus what disappears below the floor into the anchor, plus any decorative cap on top.
Rail Run Start Offset
Distance from the post centerline to where the baluster run can begin — feeds directly into a baluster spacing layout.
Walking through a real starting newel
Same five formulas, filled in step by step, for a 3.5" starting post carrying a 36" rail up a 35° stair — the default this calculator loads with.
Long-point allowance
3.5" post width × tan(35°) = 3.5 × 0.7002 ≈ 2.45". That's how much taller the long-point corner needs to be than the level 36" rail height to let the gooseneck fitting transition smoothly.
Long point and short point
Short point stays at the 36" target rail height. Long point = 36 + 2.45 = 38.45". This is the angled top cut you'd scribe onto the post blank before installing.
Finished post height
Because this is a starting post, the finished height is the long point: 38.45" above the finished floor.
Total blank & stock length
Add the bolt-through drop (3" default) and a flat cap (0"): 38.45 + 3 + 0 = 41.45" total blank needed. The calculator rounds that up to the next stocked newel blank length so you're not left short at the saw.
Notice the finished height chip stays green at 36" even though the post itself is cut to 38.45" — the compliance check always reads off the level rail height (the short point), not the taller long-point corner, because that's the height the rail actually sits at.
Standard newel post widths
Post width isn't code-regulated the way riser or tread is — it's driven by proportion, rail hardware, and structural feel. These are common stocked sizes, not a hard rule.

Mounting, housing & rail transitions
A post can hit every height number on this page and still fail if it's not anchored to carry a real handhold load, or if the rail fitting doesn't have room to transition. This section covers what's easy to overlook.
Choosing a mounting method
A surface-mounted steel anchor barely drops below the floor; a bolt-through connector needs to clear the subfloor to reach framing; a notched, housed post dropped alongside a stringer or into a newel block goes deepest. Gooseneck vs. turnout
A gooseneck rises from level rail up into the post at the long-point angle; a turnout curves the rail down into the post near the floor. Either way the post needs the long-point height calculated above — the fitting choice changes appearance, not the underlying math.
Housing into the stringer
A housed starting post is often notched to lap over the top riser or stringer for extra rigidity, in addition to whatever anchor bolt secures it below the floor. This notch depth is separate from — and doesn't replace — the floor/anchor drop above.
Cap and finish allowance
A flush or chamfered cap adds nothing to the blank length. A turned ball or finial cap is usually a separate glued-on piece, so confirm whether your supplier's "post height" spec already includes it before you double-count the addition here.
These are planning-stage estimates, not a stamped structural design. A post carrying an unusually long unsupported guard run may need engineered blocking regardless of what this calculator shows.
Common mistakes when planning a newel post
Most newel post call-backs trace to one of these six planning errors, not to bad carpentry.
Measuring rail height from the floor at a raked post
On a run, rail height has to be measured perpendicular from the nosing line, not straight up from the floor — using the wrong reference shifts every downstream number.
Cutting a starting post square instead of to the long point
Skipping the long-point allowance leaves no room for a gooseneck or turnout to transition cleanly, forcing an awkward, too-short rail sweep at the bottom of the stair.
Under-sizing the floor drop for the anchor
A newel post absorbs real lateral load every time someone grabs the rail. A shallow drop into a bolt-through or housed connection is a common reason a post works loose within a year.
Forgetting the 36" guard check at an open landing
A landing or turn newel that also guards an open edge has to clear the residential 36" guard minimum, not just the 34"–38" handrail range — the two checks aren't interchangeable.
Ordering the wrong stock blank length
Rounding the total blank length down instead of up to the next stocked size leaves no material for the drop or the long-point cut once the post is on site.
Not accounting for finish flooring installed later
Tile, hardwood, or thick carpet with pad added after the post goes in effectively shortens the finished post height above the new floor surface — plan the drop with the final floor buildup in mind.
