Measuring before you buy a ladder
Attic ladders are sold to fit a specific ceiling height range and a specific rough opening. Get both numbers right before you order, or you'll be cutting rails to compensate.
Measure floor-to-ceiling height
Hold a tape measure plumb from the finished floor directly below where the hatch will sit, up to the finished ceiling surface. Don't measure into the attic — the ladder's box sits flush with the ceiling drywall, not the top of the joists.
Check your joist spacing
Most residential ceilings run 16" or 24" on-center. Probe or use a stud finder along the ceiling near the planned location — this decides whether a standard 22.5" opening fits without cutting a joist.
Estimate your combined load
Add the heaviest person who'll climb it to the heaviest single load they'll carry up — a tote of holiday decorations, a box of tools. This sets the ANSI duty rating you need, not just body weight.

Check the height range
Off-the-shelf attic ladders are built for roughly 7'–10' (84"–120") ceilings. At 126", this installation sits 6" above the standard range, so a stock-length ladder won't reach the floor cleanly without buckling — an extended or telescoping model is needed instead.
Check the opening against joist spacing
At 16" O.C. framing, the clear space between joists is roughly 16 − 1.5 = 14.5". The standard 22.5" opening is wider than that clear space, so one joist has to be cut and the load redistributed through a header — this would not be needed on 24" O.C. framing, where 22.5" fits exactly.
Size the header
Header = 22.5 + 6 = 28.5", built as a doubled (2-ply) header at each end of the opening, with two doubled trimmer joists alongside the cut. This is the same bearing logic used on any framed floor or ceiling opening.
Match the duty rating to the load
320 lb combined load exceeds the 300 lb Type IA class, so the calculator steps up to Type IAA (375 lb) — the next class up, never rounded down, even though 320 is much closer to 300 than to 375.
Estimate the clearance needed
Swing clearance ≈ 126 × 0.75 ≈ 94.5", and landing run ≈ 126 × 0.55 ≈ 69.3" — both scale up directly with the taller-than-standard height from step 1, which is exactly why an out-of-range ceiling needs more than just a longer ladder; it needs a bigger clear floor footprint too.
This is exactly why the height-range chip can fail even when the opening and duty rating both check out fine — a tall ceiling cascades into every downstream clearance number, and it's the usual reason a "standard" attic ladder doesn't actually fit a specific house.

Framing, headroom & fire separation
A ladder can be sized correctly and still fail inspection on three things this section covers — how the header actually carries load, whether you can stand up near the hatch, and what a garage ceiling requires that a hallway ceiling doesn't.
Header & trimmer framing
Whenever the opening width exceeds the clear space between joists, one joist gets cut and its load is picked up by a doubled header at each end plus doubled trimmer joists running alongside the opening — the same framing pattern used for any ceiling or floor penetration.
Checking attic headroom
Measured as unobstructed clear height in the attic at or above the opening. Rough opening size says nothing about this — it's the single most common reason an otherwise-correct hatch installation still fails to give safe standing room once you're through it. Fire-rated ceiling assemblies
If the ceiling below the attic is a fire-rated separation — most commonly a garage ceiling under living space — a standard ladder isn't enough. Energy code sealing

These are planning-stage estimates, not a stamped structural design. A wide opening, an unusual span, or a fire-rated assembly may need a contractor's or engineer's sign-off regardless of what this calculator shows.
Common mistakes when sizing an attic ladder
Most attic ladder complaints — and most failed installs — trace back to one of these five planning errors, not to bad carpentry.
Measuring at an angle instead of plumb
A tape measure held even slightly off-vertical reads longer than the true floor-to-ceiling height, which can leave the installed ladder too long to lock properly — a genuine buckling hazard, not just an inconvenience.
Ordering a wide opening without checking joist spacing
A 30" opening always requires cutting a joist and installing header framing. Skipping that check until the ceiling is already cut open turns a weekend project into a structural one.
Skipping the attic-side headroom check
An opening can meet every code minimum and still leave you crouched the moment you step off the top rung. Check clear height in the attic separately from the opening size.
Underestimating swing and landing clearance
The ladder needs open floor space to unfold before it ever reaches the ground. A nearby wall, door swing, or parked car in a garage install is the most common reason a correctly-sized ladder won't fully deploy.
Rating for body weight only
A 250 lb duty rating covers a 250 lb person carrying nothing. Add whatever you'll actually carry up — decorations, tools, moving boxes — before picking a class, not after.
