Measuring your platform frame before you calculate
The calculator only needs two real numbers from your plan or your site — the rest follows from those.
Measure platform width along the ledger
Run a tape along the ledger board or rim joist the new joists attach to, outside face to outside face. This is the dimension that determines how many joist bays you have, not the depth the joists run out to.
Confirm your target spacing
Pull this from your plan set or span table — 16" on center is the most common residential default, but tighter spacing is common under tile, stone, or heavier finishes.
Decide how each joist is supported
If one end sits on top of a beam or existing rim joist, only that opposite end gets hung. If the joist runs between two ledgers — common on a floating landing — both ends need a hanger.
Note any stair or floor openings
A stair opening in the platform needs a doubled header framed between trimmer joists, and that header typically needs a hanger at both ends — enter the opening count in Advanced to include it.
The five formulas behind every result
Nothing on this page is a black box. Here's exactly what runs when you change a number.
Joist Count
Bays of joist space divided into the target spacing, rounded to a whole number, plus one for the extra joist at the far edge.
Actual Spacing
Rounding the joist count almost never lands exactly on your target spacing — this is the real spacing you'll actually frame to.
Base Hangers
One hanger per joist if only one end is hung, or two per joist if the joist is hung at both ends between two ledgers.
Total Hangers
Each doubled-header opening adds two more hangers — one for each end of the header, which is itself supported by trimmer joists.
Order Qty & Nails
Nails = H_total × nails/hanger
Waste is applied to the purchase quantity only; the nail total is based on the hangers actually being installed.
Walking through a real 70" wide landing
Same five formulas, filled in step by step, for a stair landing platform 70" wide, targeting 16" O.C. spacing, framed ledger-to-beam with one stair opening — the default this calculator loads with.
Joist count
70" width, targeting 16" spacing: 70 ÷ 16 = 4.375, which rounds to 4, plus 1 for the edge joist gives 5 joists. You can't build a fractional joist bay, so the calculator always rounds to the nearest whole number here.
Actual spacing
Re-divide the width by the bays between those 5 joists: 70 ÷ (5 − 1) = 17.5" actual spacing — looser than the 16" target you started with. That gap is exactly why the calculator shows both numbers instead of just echoing your target back.
Base hangers
Framing style is "one end hung," so each of the 5 joists needs exactly one hanger where it lands on the beam side: 5 × 1 = 5 base hangers.
Opening hangers and total
One stair opening adds a doubled header with a hanger at each end: 5 + (2 × 1) = 7 total hangers. With a 10% waste factor that's an order quantity of ceil(7 × 1.10) = 8 hangers, and at 10 nails per hanger that's 7 × 10 = 70 nails for the joists actually being installed.
Notice the 17.5" actual spacing came out looser than the 16" target purely from rounding 4.375 down to 4 joists. If your span table's maximum allowable spacing for this joist size and load is exactly 16", that rounding pushes you over it — the fix is framing to 6 joists instead of 5, which tightens actual spacing to 14" and adds one more hanger. Always check the actual-spacing result against your span table before cutting, not just the target you typed in.

Not every hanger on a platform frame does the same job. Match the style to how the joist actually sits before you order.

Nail counts vary significantly by manufacturer and specific model — always pull the exact fastener schedule from the hanger's own ICC-ES report or manufacturer catalog page before ordering nails.
Corrosion rating quick reference
Mismatching a hanger's finish to the lumber it touches is one of the fastest ways to shorten a connection's life. This is a reference starting point, not a substitute for your local code or the connector manufacturer's compatibility chart.

Doubled joists, stair openings & trimmers
A platform can have the right number of standard hangers and still come up short at the one spot that actually gets walked on and cut into — the stair opening.
Why stair openings need doubled headers
Cutting a stair opening into a platform interrupts one or more joists, so the load has to be carried around it with a doubled header framed between doubled trimmer joists. That header hangs from a heavier hanger at each end — this calculator's Opening Hangers result adds both automatically.
Matching hanger to actual lumber size
A "2×10" hanger is sized to the actual 9¼" dimension of a 2×10, not the 10" nominal size. Buying by nominal size alone is a common ordering mistake — always confirm the hanger's interior width against your actual lumber before buying in bulk.
Blocking vs. hung joists
Solid blocking installed between joists for rigidity is typically toe-nailed in place, not hung — it doesn't add to your hanger count. Only joists and headers that actually terminate into a ledger, beam, or rim need a hanger.
The nail schedule sets the rating
A hanger's published load capacity assumes every specified nail hole is filled with the correct nail type. Skipping holes, or substituting common nails for hardened joist-hanger nails, quietly lowers the connection below its rated capacity.
These are planning-stage estimates for ordering hardware, not a stamped structural design. A wide opening, an unusual point load, or a long cantilevered trimmer may need an engineer's sign-off regardless of what this calculator shows.
Common mistakes when ordering joist hangers
Most inspection call-backs on hanger installs trace back to one of these six errors, not to a miscounted quantity.
Using common nails instead of hanger nails
Standard box or common nails are softer and thinner than hardened joist-hanger nails and don't deliver the connector's rated shear strength — this is one of the most common code call-backs on a framing inspection.
Sizing by nominal, not actual, lumber width
A "2×10" hanger has to match the actual 9¼" dimension of the joist, not the 10" nominal number — ordering by nominal size alone can leave you with a hanger that doesn't seat correctly.
Skipping heavier hangers at stair openings
The doubled header framing a stair opening carries more load than a typical joist and needs a rated double-shear hanger at each end, not a standard single hanger.
Leaving nail holes empty
A hanger's published load rating assumes every specified hole is filled with the correct nail — an under-nailed hanger can look installed while carrying a fraction of its rated capacity.
Ignoring corrosion rating on PT or exterior framing
Modern pressure-treated lumber chemicals corrode standard or lightly-coated steel faster than older treatments did — exterior and PT-contact connections need a hot-dip galvanized or stainless hanger and matching nails.
Not ordering spares
Hangers get bent, dropped, or occasionally misordered on a busy job site. A 10% waste allowance is cheap insurance against a mid-day supply run.
