Most staircases need roughly 150–300 lumens per step for safe nighttime visibility, delivered through under-tread LED strip, recessed riser pucks, or handrail-integrated fixtures. Which one you pick, and how you wire it, depends on tread depth, whether the stair is open- or closed-riser, and how long a run the strip has to cover before voltage drop starts dimming the far end.

Sizing lumens, voltage, and driver wattage

LED strip is rated in lumens per meter and watts per meter, and both scale with the length you actually use — not the length of the roll. A common SMD2835 strip runs about 400–600 lumens per meter at roughly 4.8–9.6 watts per meter, depending on density and color temperature.

Worked example: a 13-step staircase with 10 in (254 mm) treads needs strip cut into 13 segments, each roughly 0.254 m long. At 500 lumens/m and 4.8 W/m, each segment delivers about 127 lumens and draws about 1.2 W. Total run length is 3.3 m, total draw is about 16 W — size the driver at 20 W or higher to keep it running below full capacity, which extends driver life.

Voltage matters more than most people expect. 12V strip is fine for short runs, but past about 5 m (16 ft) the voltage drop along the copper traces starts dimming the far end noticeably. 24V strip halves the current for the same power draw, which roughly halves the voltage drop — better for stairs longer than one flight or wired from a single driver at the top or bottom.

Where to put it: strip, pucks, or handrail

Under-tread strip, recessed into a routed channel just behind the nosing, washes light down onto the tread below and reads as nearly invisible during the day. It’s the most common choice for closed-riser stairs and needs a diffuser channel to avoid visible hot spots from individual LEDs.

Riser-mounted pucks — small round or square fixtures set into the riser face — give a more architectural, evenly-spaced look and work well on open staircases where strip would be visible from the side. They cost more per point of light but are easier to service individually if one fails.

Handrail-integrated LED, run inside a channel on the underside of the rail, lights the walking path rather than the treads directly. It suits stairs where tread-level lighting would be blocked by a runner or thick carpet.

Motion sensors are worth adding on any of the three. A typical PIR sensor for stair lighting uses a 20–30 second off-delay after the last detected motion, long enough to clear the flight without the lights cutting out mid-step.

Common mistakes

Undersizing the driver by guessing wattage instead of calculating it from strip length: a 3.3 m run at 4.8 W/m draws 16 W, and a 12 W driver will overheat and shorten its own life even though the strip still lights.

Running strip past the manufacturer’s maximum single-run length (commonly 5 m for 12V strip) without a mid-run power injection point — this causes visible dimming at the far end, not a failure, which makes it easy to misdiagnose as a bad strip.

Using indoor-rated strip (no IP rating or IP20) on covered exterior stairs, where humidity and temperature swings corrode the copper traces within a season or two — exterior installs need at least IP65.

Mounting a motion sensor near an HVAC supply vent or a window, where airflow or sunlight triggers false activations and trains the household to just leave the lights on manually.
